External Filters

Thats strange.. Most people i have spoken to rave abouth the eheims..

If i do take the plunge, what are the main advantages i will notice over the top of the internal juwel one..

Will it enable higher stocking with better filtration?

An external filter always looks easier to manage with it being less mess ;)

Squid?

I think i will go for the Juwel 405 as i don't trust Ehiem after the damage my friend showed me. He has had three Ehiem's one in each 4ft tank and they have been awful.

Thanks for your suggestions

James

please, do yourself a favour, get the eheim. there's no way a fluval will outperform it. You'll regret the decision to get the fluval.

The reason you can often get big discounts on fluvals is because they are crap, as with everything you get what you pay for and the more you pay the better the quality of the filter, my advise would be to just spend that extra 20 or 30 quid and get a Eheim.

CFC,

I'm beginning to agree with you, I've just come home to another puddle inside the tank cupboard. (Fluval 304!) I can't have a leaky filter! I spend too long on the road everyday to fiddle. I'm ordering a new XP3/Eheim tomorrow.

Official Announcement.

Fluvals now stink. I am now fed up with it. It leaks, its too hard to take the damn lid off and its going to visit the hammer if it keeps this leaking thing up. The tank level has dropped by an inch, so that makes about six litres of water on my stand, and on the flippin' laminate floor!

Its relegated to the quarantine tank. Order being placed somewhere online now..... :sly:

This seems to be a common thing for juwel tank owners? You see those internal filters for sale all the time on ebay. Why do people waste their money on buying these expensive tanks in the first place if they then cut an expensive bit out & bin it??

I used to have a problem with my Fluval 204 leaking after performing maintenance. The solution that works for me (thus far) is to always make sure the rubber seal in the motor housing is soaking wet (by taking it out and running it under a tap or dipping it in old tank water).

Thus far it has worked well, though it may not solve another, generic problem that hasn't yet struck me.

Its like this,

Juwel Filter very hard to keep clean, and too bloody noisy.

Fluval filter very cheap, and turns out to be very nasty (like what a surprise!)

Lesson learned, buy Eheim or Rena, don't be tempted by cheapy Fluval or any cheap Eheim clones(jebo).

I agree with the Fluval filter, never realy liked them.

I,ve got 5 juwel tanks, and have only ever had a problem with the record 60 filter, the reat ar superb, there easy to clean, i just take the floss out once a week and rince it in hot water, because i do this i only clean the sponges about once every two months.

Dont buy the juwel floss inserts there to course, if you use the large sheet filter floss and cut them down there cheaper and, is finer stuff so it catches all the dirt.

Ive got my fluval 405 and its ace, im really impressed. I am running ehiem media inside it though.

Fantastic

Unbeatable

Thanks

James

£189 for a rio 180 with the stand isnt too bad..thats why i went for it. The arent bad looking for the money. i bought it because for a package deal and i quite liked the access through the hood. so many of the package deals dont leave you with ease of access to ensure that you can clean the damn thing.. i will see how the filter goes, i wont be overstocked by any means. I may change it later.

i am in a similar dillema. i have been trying to decide between a fluval 405 the fx5 (for its features) or a eheim 2229 wet/dry or a eheim 2128. after reading reviews i have knocked the idea of a 405 on the head and am interested in the fx5 because of its featues over the eheim. if people can move me over to the eheim then could somebody please let me know if it is worth getting the wet/dry or the ordinary eheim. and what advantages they have over each other from personnal experience.
i have a fluval 404 and an internal fluval 4 plus running in tank at mo, the 404 is only operating at about 25% as on its last legs. not bad considering it is 10 years old.
thank you for your help in this matter
