I've come across this external filter on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170748671984?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1952.l2649#ht_7931wt_1037

What are your opinions on this filter? My only concern is the surface area of the sponge compared to the sponges in a filter like a Fluval FX5 - are the sponges in this filter on eBay enough for the bacteria to form on?

Are these cheaper filters worth it or would I be better off paying extra for something like an FX5?

The cost to value comparison is one that you must make for yourself. I am seeing a decent selection of media in that ad and as long as the filter actually works and seals well I would be tempted by it if the price is good. I have no idea whether or not that is the case for that filter.
