I have just got a new external filter Fluval 205, just installed it, the tank is a Jewel 125, and I am using the internal filter in there, have done for 3 years, what I want to know is how long will it take to cycle ? When can I switch my old one off, and how will I know its cycled, as I don't want to mess the water up.

You want to run both filters in parallel for about 2 weeks.

The other way of speeding up the process, is to take half of the filter media out of the internal filter, and place it inside the 305. This will 'seed' the filter with bacteria, and will mean you will be able to remove the internal filter after about 1 week.

Hope this helps ;)

i would keep the internal filter in all the time exturnal filters are great but internals are better at polishing the water

if the internal you have is big just get a smaller one

if you are wanting to remove the internal i would leave it for 2-3 weeks a month would be better

Or better still move all the old filters media into the new, and it will be fully cycled strait away :good:

Thanks for your replies I think I will leave it for 3 or4 weeks as you say, then keep testing water. Thanks

i just ran them both for a week, then every water change after that i removed a pad from the juwel filter, worked a treat for me.

or as has been suggested, just put the juwel media in the external, you could always remove a bit every week but thats more hassle than the way i did it.
