I am planning to have a external filter in another room, well a cupboard on the other side of the wall to be exact, i was just wondering is there a limit to how long the in and out tubing can be, would i lose pressure or anything, i think they might end up about 8ft long.

Regards

Andy

Its not the length of pipe that of concern.. its lift (or height) as long as the pipes are staight and the lift is within the filters specs, you should be fine... although you may have to clean the pipes more often. (I would avoid corrugated pipes...)

ok if the lengh is not a problem, then i should be fine, it will be placed on the floor and the lift is only a few feet, no more then is would be if it was housed in the stand.

Thanks rooster :good:

More lenght = less flow, because more length means that you get more resistance. It's easy to blow through a few cm's of air line, but try blowing though a metre of the stuff.... The more length you have on the hoses and the more work the motor head has to do to push water through them. This reduces your head-height and flow, in some cases by more than half of the specs the filter has. Keep the hoses as short as possible and if you do try it, you'd be wise to buy a filter that would on paper appear to be too big to counter the flow losses :good:

Just my 2p worth

i have to agree with rabbut. the shorter the hose then the more efficint the filter

so get the biggest filter you can it won`t do any harm...

Thats what i will do then, cut it as short as i can, thinking about it, it might only be about 5ft long tubes, i am starting my journel in the next couple of days and will show the pics of the way i do the filter as soon as i can, might be a few weeks, just starting building the stand tomorrow, tank does not arrive until 3/5 weeks.
