External Filter Cleaning

I cleaned out my external filter today (Aqua one 550), however when I re attached it all and primed it, a hell of a lot of gunk was spewed in to the tank.

what am I doing wrong?, whould the filter be filled with tank water before re connecting?

Sounds pretty normal to me! All the gunk it spews out is from the pipework, so unless you give them a clean you won't be able to stop it.

People often put a fish net over the outlet so that the biggest bits are caught.

Ditto we all get it personally I use my MRS tights over the outlet similar to minnnt's fish net solution.

didnt even think of using a net or tights. will do that next time.

That's a good idea, did a wc today and was pi$$ed when that happened.
