External Filter- Advice Needed

Hi all

I have got a Jewul Vision 180. Love the tank, especially the bow front but not that happy with the internal filter. It seems to work well enough but I think it spoils the look, big box in the corner.

I have read on here that its easy enough to remove, so no probs there. But a bit of advice needed on what filter to replace it with. I want to go for an external filter so its all out of sight in the cabinet.

My local shop stocks Fluval and Tetratec Filters. I was looking to get either the Fluval 205 or the Tetratec EX700.

Has anyone had any experience of these and are they any good

Also the heater that is supplied with the jewul filter clips to the edge of the filter (the top isnt submerged), can I use this in the conventional way and stick it to the tank glass, completely submerging it.

I'd go for the fluval FX5. its one of the only, single, filters that would give you 5x turnover. Eheim pro3 and 22 classic series being the others i know of.

the 205 would probs wouldnt be enough, go for the fluval 305 , you want 4-5x the turnover an hour. With the heater it would probs have a warning label on it saying it can't be submerged if this was the case.

305 is supposed to do 1000lph, the more the better though

there is no suggestion you will have any problems with it. its just 300lph, is below the ideal 5x, bacteria need to work at their most effective. well in a 180ltr tank.

Right still deep in thought ha ha. Has anyone had any experience of the Eheim ecco pro series

Not got experience with the Ecco Pro's, but if they are similar to the normal Eccos, the pro badge is an isult. Eccos are unreliable pices of .... If you want cheap Eheim, get a Classic. Even the Eheim fan boys don't like the Eccos...

IMO, Fluval are rubbish, bu tif you want one, the 305 is the pone to get, the 205 won't cope

Tetratec is the only exturnal brand with whom I've bought a second filter, and they are great IMO. The EX1200 for your tank thoughm not the 6/700

Rena XP3's are also worth a look IMO

It's harder than most exturnals to work on, but it's still the origional design, and many have them running still at 30 years old Reliable yes, something I'd buy, probibly not, too much faffing at each clean... If money is tight and you are convinced Eheim is the brand for you though, you have your filter
