Hey everyone!

I've been gone for a while because i've had lot's of homework, but it feels good to be back. Anyways...I want to get a bigger tank and my parents are strongly against. I want something around 100 gallons. Anyone have any good excuses to convince my parents?

Thanks,
Trevo

"My fish are quickly outgrowing my tank! I need something bigger fast!"
That usally works for me, or

"Wow mom, your looking pretty today...."

"If I Dont Get A Bigger Tank For My Fish They'll Die!!!"
"If you let me get this tank promise straight As for a month" But this one will take some work
And of course
"PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WITH SUGAR AND CHERRIES ON TOP"

hhahh.....

i'm kinda like in your same shoe.... i have a 12 Gallon now... and my wife just refuse to let e buy even a 81 gallon that i've been eyeing for....

i'm even contemplating buying it for a neighbour and ask him to pretend to throw it away, so that i can quickly go pick it up!!!!

The other way i can think of is, going to the fish shop and buy a super big fish like an arowana..... but you have to remember to let them readup on crueity on animals first.....

good luck to the both of us

Who needs excuses. Take a look in the Buy and Sell online here and show her the great tanks they have for CHEAP. Yes I mean cheap. A 60G with a stand for $60. Who can pass that up? Tell them how much easier it is to maintain a bigger tank. Oh and I see you have a common plec, well he is such a messy fish that simply MUST have a bigger tank ;). There are so many good deals right now in the Buy and Sell, it is just too good to pass up.

If that doesn't work, compliments might. Anything is worth a try. Appeal to your mother's sense of decor, "wow mom, that wall is looking a little bare, hmmm I think we should dress it up a little with this *whips out a pic of a beautiful 100G tank*"

BTW, are you planning on spending your money, or your parents' money? If it is theirs the used route might appeal to their cheap side. A friend of mine just got a 90G with stand, filter, decorations, and fish(she returned those to the lfs for credit). She only paid $350. She was spending her parent's money, so they found the biggest and cheapest tank they could in the buy and sell.

hahah... if i get anything from the bell/sell section, while i save from the price of the tank, the transportation will kill me flat....

i'm stayingin Singapore

are you gonna use your money or theirs? If you use yours, you could do what i do. Buy it, sneak it to your room when they arent there and then after everything is said and done its tooo late to say no!

EDIT: Gosh this stupid internet!!! It posted a whole new post when I edited an existing post :/

here's a secret: those who aren't all that "into" the hobby have no idea about what's a really big tank. all of my real-life friends/family think that my 60g aquarium is simply enormous, even the ones that keep a few fish themselves. a 60g is a good-sized tank, but the dimensions are all wrong for anything other than a large community. its really not even the right size for a single oscar!

based on the concept that most people consider a 29g to be "large" a 100g tank must sound outrageous to your parents. they probably say things like, isn't what you have big enough?!?

instead of jumping immediately to the 100g, try and convince your parents to let you get something that's 4' or longer. don't fight for taller or deeper; just save the cash but try to get something that takes up almost as much wallspace as a 100g. that will get your parents used to the idea.

next, heavily involve your parents in your stocking decisions. don't let them pick incompatible species, but get their input. if you can get your parents to feel emotionally invested in certain fish, you'll have an easier time of getting them interested in fish in general.

if you can get your parents hooked on a medium sized display tank, you'll have a much easier time convincing them to get you a large display tank for your birthday/Christmas/Valentine's Day/Haunakah/Gift-Day of Your Choice. the secret is to make them want it for you.

i'm one of thse that thought a 29 was big until i got one :*)

I now have my eye on a 90, but its like 300 dollars and it dont come with anything but the hood :-(

It helps of course if you have reasonably wealthy parents. I'm afraid my daughter would plead in vain, simply because the money isn't there. No point in getting a big tank, if you can't keep up with the mortgage.

Who's got that sig line that says it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission?!!! ;)

It's red-devil0602 :D When my boyfriend saw that sig he just laughed.
Damn, now I can't use that trick.....

teehee....just do what i did, buy it and then say...did i tell you?, someones comming to deliver something for me today, and when they say what....erm...just another tank its not that big honest!!! hehehe 60G on the kitchen counter woohoo...mum just says i thought i told you not to buy that...and me says....i couldnt help it, it was soooo cheap, shes come round to the idea now, just dont pester about it or talk about it too much and theyll come round in the end :p
