I was in a fish shop the other day (not my lfs) talking to a shop assistant about lighting and evaporation he said that it was fine to have glass lids over a reef tank.
I always believed that it was important not to have lids for the light to penetrate properly, but he assured me that the lids would not cause any problems and cut down on evaporation.
Im finding this hard to accept as we all know you cant get a sun tan through your car window. (unless their open of course).
so surely having glass lids over the tank would have an effect?

Any views please.

I might be wrong with this but i am sure thati read somewhere that light passing through a 10mm glass panel will reduce the light stregnth by over 15%

The other problem of course is heat. Evaporation is how the tank keep cool. If the tank cannot evaporate then the heat build up will be a real problem.

I'd also be concerned about the amount of salt crud that would end up on the glass. I use a Current-USA Satellite rig inside a canopy with no glass. It has a piece of thin plexiglass as part of the assembly to keep the salt air off the contacts and such, and that plexi has to be cleaned about once a week to remove all the salt buildup on it. I can only imagine that it would be worse with a full sheet of glass that much closer to the water surface.

Am I the only one that HAS burnt my arm if it's on the door while driving??

I was reading lastnight that is may filter UV but that wont have any ill effents on the corals etc...

not sure how true it is - but i have been burnt through my car window.
