Euthanize or hope

Hi...I have a failing platy with normal water parameters and no evidence of disease. When they are on the bottom, doing the headstand, but still breathing.......euthanize or hope? Anyone have a comeback kid? SH

Never had a comeback from that... But I wouldn't euthanize yet. You never know.

No it isn't sounding to good i'm afraid.

I'm not sure what to treat, ie, doesn't seem to fit any criteria specifically. The platy was fine the other day and the change was rapid. It would be a guess at the expense of the other fish and biological filter SH

Usually do that sort of behaviour when they are dying i'm afraid.

I had a very similar (actually, the exact) problem a long while ago. Since I figured it was all or nothing I gave her a salt treatment with twice the recommended amount of salt and with a temp of 82 F with undeclorinated water, but only for 3 minutes. It was the longest three minutes I've ever experianced. I figured if it was anything on her or in her it would have to die in that environment.

At the end of it she stopped moving entirely

Then she floated on her side not breathing

reached in with the net to say good bye, and she sprung to life, jumped out of the bowl and I had to scoop her up with my hands and get her to the tank. She jetted behind some plants . . . and she's still alive in my parents tank and on her 12th batch of fry

So I never give up on them anymore

Hi..added melafix as a last ditch effort with multiple water changes. He looked pretty bad today. I euthanized him. Thanks. SH

I am a newbie and fortunately have not had to make the decision you had to yet. In a case where you have to euthanize, what is the best, quickest, and least painful method? I'm sure I will have to do this sooner or later.

There isn't a nice method of doing it, clove oil and vodka,overdose of internal bacteria med.

Please do not use alcohol/vodka...I tried this on a VERY ill platy once and she fought for 10 minutes and was still very much alive. I ended up using a blow to the head...aka. the-fist-of-death
