Hi...we've had this post before. Rapid immersion in an ice bath I think is the most humane. Putting it in the freezer is NOT..that is slow. We all recall how ice applied to a burn or wound brings relief. We use topical agents before certain surgical procedures (ethyl chloride) that brings on rapid cold and loss of sensation, i.e. analgesia AND anesthesia. During heart surgery, an ice bath is placed around some patients heads or hearts. Placing a small fish in an ice bath rapidly brings on anesthesia, analgesia and the end of pain. I have to disagree with benzocaine..it is a topical anesthetic and may not stop heart function or brain function. Also, apply it to an open wound..it burns initially. SH
