Euphillya

Hope i've spelt it right for starters, I have been given a frag of euphillya any advice on this coral welcomed please.

Heya, right well its a LPS coral, it is a aggressive coral as in stings most things that come into contact however they are still safe.
They like a stable aquarium with good PH levels also, they require good calcium levels 400-500mgs

Feeding twice too three times a week of invert food, copepods, brineshrimp. Do this more near the end of the lighting days so the tenticals can catch the food.
Your lighting needs to be t5 or MH as they are light dependible due to their symbolic algea in them.

Cheers i have 2*36w T5's 1 actinic 1 daylight plus tube a 150 MH so lighting it shouldn't be a prob I water change 10% a week all the usual parameters are good ph ammonia nitrite nitrate not tested for calcium as no test kit, hopefully it will settle in ok.

I have found mine don't like too much flow so if you have a quieter spot fairly high upin the tank that'd be great. They do have sweeper tentacles so beng higher up is good in 2 ways. 1st it lets them get plenty of light and 2nd they don't get chance to sting as much stuff.

Thats good to hear, as for calcium it is wise to have one, ive been running without one from the day i started but a few months in keeping LPS i thought id should get one. Also just askin do u put calcium additives, cos u must not if you dont test it, bad things can happen... but i did a test few days ago and i found just leaving it atm i had a calcium of 450mgs! just from the aragonite sand!

Yeah, most Euphyllia genus corals are a fan of diffuse laminar flows (like those produced by Seios/Tunzes) but do not like point-flows (like maxijets, magdrives, etc). As far as LPS go, they're one of the easiest. Their only downside really is that they're exceptionally aggressive and have a very powerful sting. Any other non-Euphyllia corals nearby will probably fall victim to their sting if within range of their tentacles. Hammer corals are probably the strongest stinging coral out there. Which species did you get?

Also, one last thing, while they will benefit for sure from direct feedings, Euphillia genus corals do NOT require direct feedings and do just fine under photosynthesis under even moderate PC lighting.

Yup, the common names for Euphyllia genus corals are Torch, Hammer, Frogspawn, and Galaxea

i thought that torch corals were the most bad a$$ euphylla in the genus? or are hammers and torchs level pegging?

MOST hammers are just a tad more powerful than Torches. Every now and again my hammer sends out a sweeper to keep my torch in its place.
