Established neons wiped out by addition of new neons

That is something I never thought of. Case the joint and see what's what and how things happen at a store. I always impulse buy but I am definitely going to remember this.

I had to learn that the hard way, and also learned not to buy any fish during extreme weather. Last winter we had a real brutal couple of cold snaps, whatever fish made it to the store were almost certainly going to buyer's tanks to die. And the last week we've had the usual summer month "heat waves" so I haven't even gone by the store. Once we get back to regular weather, I might swing by to look.

I'm lucky to have a mom & pop nearby, I cringe to think of buying fish from Petco, or Pet"Smart"......but, they're all some people have in the US, and don't/won't buy online & have shipped

Just think....some Walmarts sell aquarium fish....*shudders*

The chains around me are what they are. I've bought fish from both chains and lfs, and have had mixed results from all of them although the lfs always has more variety and was the only place bringing ottos.

Now walmart.. I'd buy some things like hoses, nets, a cheap pump MAYBE, but any critical equipment I'd rather buy name brand and from a specialized store or online. You get what you pay for is a golden rule.

My roommate bought 6 neon tetras from PetSmart last weekend... None lived

Just an update on the neons all dying. It's been a little more than a week now and nothing else in the tank has changed. 9 zebras and 4 cory cats seem to be doing fine. I have also started to do water changes as per a recommendation.

Hard to tell what could have done this, but being as it affected only the neons one could guess it was ntd, but even if there were pictures or some outward symptoms, sometimes you just can't find out the root cause. Good for you that your other fish seem healthy and for starting the water changes, hopefully your next addition to your tank will fare better.
