Erythromycin To Treat Bga

Hi,

Is Erythromycin the same as Maracyn? I can't find any "Maracyn" in the UK but I'm pretty sure I've got the first signs of BGA.

Does anyone know what the dose would be too?

Yes, it's the same thing.

You could just try any type of algae control chemical from your LFS...

I'm currently treating my tank for GW with Tetra Algae Control (I'm in the US), and it's working a treat... killing other algae too.

Be sure to check out the pinned article in this section (algae in the planted aquarium). There's info there about the dosing.

Also, regarding how long it will keep -- the package should have an expiration date on it.

I hope you can get rid of it quickly -- it's nasty stuff!!

thanks everyone. i had it about 7 or 8 months ago - i managed to get 5 tabs of proper maracyn then. i think it came back as i had a collection of debris fora few days around the filter. there's very very little but i want to nip it in the bud.

That's where I bought mine from. It will keep for years, even if the use by date is passed if you keep it cool and dry then I doubt they'll be a problem.

Good luck with the BGA. I get the odd spot forming on my fern leaves occasionally for some reason - may be lack of water circualtion in the fern's central area. Nowhere else. I just dose extra KNO3 and add a crushed 400mg tablet with fresh water change. It clears within 24hrs.

I think the key is to spot it early enough and treat before it gets out of hand.

The underlying causes IME are lack of circulation, too much natural light and low nitrates.

Thanks a lot George, it's right under the filter intake on the floor where there's not much circulation, it's the side nearest a window (not directly infront) and the nitrates are 5 (just tested) so i'll get them up a bit. So your theory is right above.

I'll soon get it gone - thanks for your help! BTW - your tank looks great as normal, I'm still following your journal
