I'm wondering if I should have my filter and/or heater switched off for water changes? I think I read something about it in here somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Or should I just push them down with the water level until it's filled back up? Thanks!

It's much safer to switch them off; there's no risk of them running dry then; I've exploded a heater by lowering the water too far without noticing; it's not fun...

I turn the heaters off when i do water changes because part of them would be out of the water and prone to cracking.

I plan on wiring in a few power switches, one of them to make the tank safe for water changes, but im lazy :hyper:

Most people are very careful with electricity but don't think twice about putting there arm in a tank with 240V power leads going into it

OMG you have a very Valid point...
I too turn my filter off, but have left my heater on.....hense the inch long burn on the outside of my wrist :/

I turn everything off apart from my air stone / pump. The heater, lights and filter all go off until i have finished.

If your messing with your tank whatever the reason everything should be turned off from the mains or unpluged SAFTY FIRST however unlikely you think that something will happen :good:

I dont switch off but I know I should so if you don;t hear from me for a while you probably know why!!!
