Equipment Needed

hmm... from what I have read you are looking to put a betta with some guppies, bettas don't get along very well with guppies. The cories should be okay, though it's always a question mark whith bettas. This is because some bettas are more agressive than others.

For just starting out the components you have listed are the ones you need to get. Except for the air pump, you will only need that if you are thinking of getting an air stone or air powered ornament.

You mentioned you don't want to get a starter kit that is fine because in my experience most starter kits will come with everything you need but the quality of the equipment is not top notch.

Though I have found that buying the starter kits are significantly cheaper than getting everything seperately. You really get what you pay for.

For pricing you will have to look at the stores in your area, but I find that the big pet superstores have the best prices when it comes to equipment. Though there is normally significant differences from store to store so you will have to do some price comparisons, to get the best pricing.

Also don't rule out getting things second hand especially the tank, hood and lighting you can save quite a bit doing it that way.

For water test kits get a Master Test Kit, it will contain every test you need and it much cheaper than buying them all seperately.

You may also want to look at fishless cycling. How to do a Fishless Cycle

Hope that helps
