my LFS has one endler that they are holding for me (YEY) some lady brought it in saying that she didnt want it anymore cause it was nipping her other fishes fins! well me and john (assistan manager at my LFS) got in a fight he said that i was stupid and that it was a baby male guppy! BS it wa clearly an endler (it looked just like the one in the pic i have in my sig (( the one endler by himself))) ^_^ so i asked the manager to hold it for me and she said yes! :sly: luckily she doesnt know what an endler is and doesnt know that you can only find them in cali! :shifty:

Congrats :)

I love endlers, I'm trying to start up a big ol' community of them but they just don't seem to wanna breed like theyre supposed to. Silly endlers

i have a few females for free...if interested

I can never find them here and I live in Nor Cali. I've never even seen one! I wanted to have a community of them too.

Ive never seen an elder in real life, but I live in Missouri. I wish we had them around here they look cool. :fish: :- :music: :wizard: :/ :ninja: :( :eek:sama: :D

Funny, I must have some avid breeders where I live, because I never have any problems finding Endlers (my favourite fish of all!)
Every fish store I go to, whether it is a big box chain or a specialty store seems to have Endlers. Generally between $3.50 and $6 each (CND) I just have a bit of trouble finding females, as people tend to throw them together with the female guppies. This has resulted in a few Endler/Guppy mixes, a big no-no in some circles. I think that are very pretty, but am afraid it is going to make buying pure Endlers harder for me in future. I keep my Guppies and Endlers in the same tank, but I don't breedfish, I haven't got the time or space.

I probably would be able to ship some to anyone in Canada who is interested, but I won't be able to do so until sometime in the fall. Or if you live near the US board, I can ship it to a Canadian PO near the boarder for pickup. I would just charge for shipping.

I suppose I did not realise how lucky I was when growing up in South Africa then  I used to just go to any old local pond or stream and scoop buckloads full of them up and just pick the nicests ones out (though they are all lovely !). Ahh well, there are loads of other lovely tropical fish available here in the UK that simply is not available in South Africa as it's too costly for most :/

Not all Endler's may be as pure as they are thought to be as they can be easy mistaken for guppies and could easiy breed with guppies. I bought some feeder fish a while back that were sold a "feeder guppies." I actually wanted them as pets, but as they grew, the male developed their color in a strange way that didn't resemble anything like a typical guppy. At that time, I had other guppies in the tank, and eventually the feeder's inbred. Later, I realized my new so-called feeder's had coloration that more closely resembled Endler's Livebearer. Now I have a bunch of hybrids, however, beautiflully colored ones!

Through experience, I've found that they survive best in algae-rich warm water, full of live vegitation - they love it! I don't change water much anymore so as not to disturb their habitat and just let the algae take over. At one point I had over 100 hybrids swimming in one my little 10 gallon tank, but due to previous regular water change and tank cleaning, I started losing them. But after I managed to stablize my tanks with "dirty water", they are proliferating.

You can read Professor Endler's email here, in a response to a post on a forum, back in 1995:

A more elaborate description of Endler's can be found here with vivid photos which also describes the hypothesis that hybrids are becoming more prevalent: http://members.cox.net/newcomb1/endlers.html

The LFS I went to the other day had a tank with (what were labelled as) Endlers Guppies. I had a good look, and they looked nothing like the pics. They were stripy... Zebra patterned. Is this just a colour variation?
