Endler question for UK'ers

which part of the UK? I see them reasonably often.. though I wouldnt consider them anything more than class P's.. N's seem to be pretty hard to get hold of. k's are pretty cheap at least

Be very wary about accepting any "female" Endlers as such. A lot (perhaps most) of the stuff offered cheaply through regular stores are hybrids, and especially with the females there is a strong tempation for some exporters and wholesalers to simply pass female guppies off as female Endlers.

Often, the only 100% way to get real Endlers is through clubs and breeders.

Cheers,

Neale

the others are right, a lot of "endlers" found in shops and on ebay are hybrids. what type are you looking for. A lot of the shops wont sell sell them for various reasons, the wholesalers wont let them have females, or they dont think the females are very sellable

I have lots of TRUE endler females. In fact I have trouble getting males even when they breed I tend to get a higher female percentage.

You will be surprised by how many TRUE endler breeders there are in the UK. And as for e-bay I can Guarantee that any Endlers from Chrisuk2006 are the genuine article. I know this for he gets them from a main Endler breeder in the States and this guy strain breeds so there is variety in his auctions.

But I must agree with bettawen, the wholesalers don't get females because they aren't very attractive and therefore don't sell to well.

kiefels, what temp do you keep your tanks at, usually for endlers the higher the temp the more females.

I am currently experimenting with the temps.

My first lot of fry were at 24-26c and I got two males. I have since dropped to 22c and have have three more lots of fry but they are still too young to sex.

Just set the endler tank up at the beginning of the year and have just got it comfortable enough for them to start breeding.

Hard to keep a low temp when the weather is so warm though.

i know lol, so im expecting a high ratio of females over the next month or so. good luck

I have just had another batch of fry. On the hottest day of July ever recorded so I guess I will be getting even more females.

I guess it's good to keep the female population higher than male but this last lot of fry of about 30 may make my tanks very drab.

Another thing I am finding is. My females can have another brood before the fry are old enough to sex. Making things a bit crowded for a short time until I can sex them. They don't seem to mind but I like to keep the ratios balanced and try to limit the inbreeding to a minimum.

Oh the joys of keeping livebearers.

What would I do if I didn't have them?

I have been keeping Endlers for some time now. I have 2 stains, blackbars which are definitely hybrids although they haven't been near a guppy in many, many generations but they have the white dorsal fin. I also have yellow top swords which are purebred endlers. I have found with both types that when I first got them most of the babies were female. This went on for many months with just the odd male. The blackbars which I got first now seem to breed almost as many males as females and the yellow top swords having only produced females up until now (the hottest time of the year) and suddenly I am getting a lot more males.
I have tried all the temperature tricks and it made no difference at all. I wonder if it is natures way of setting up a colony, i.e. need plenty of females to produce the babies before you need males?
If you google Endlers you will find dedicated websites and there are breeders on the forums who sell class n endlers, if you want the real thing it is the best way to buy them.
