I have to empty my Aquaone 980 tank tomorrow, as it has developed a small leak, luckily it is still under Guarantee.
As i am getting on a bit and the tank holds 50 gallons, i need an easy way to empty it( one that won't half kill me). i was thinking i could use part of my hosepipe, stick it in the tank and suck ,it would have to be about 15ft long,i was wondering is it possible to get any suction on that length of pipe.
I was up most of last night plotting my plan of action, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi

If creating a syphon on that length is a problem just start it off with a powerhead or something to force the water through till the syphon starts.

Alternatively prime the hosipipe with water using a funnel and a plug on the other end of the hosepipe ( duck tape or a cork should do) then with the hosepipe full of water drop the end into the tank whilst releasing the cork from the other end, the extra rush of water will help kick start a full syphon.

Hope you dont get too wet!

Use the hosepipe and push it up against the output from your filter may take a couple of mins to get the syphon going but as long as its done underwater the syphon will continue when you pull it away from the filter output

Hope that helps

I've done it it's easy

just stick the hose in the tank stick the other end out the window or in the tub or wherever and suck on the tub end of the pipeuntil the water gets close to the end. Now cover your end with your thumb and put it in the tub/out a window and let go. As long as the water level is higher than the end of the tube you can drain out allmost all of the water

Klein,Tricks and Torrean, thanks for replying and for the great ideas, you have set my mind at rest, i was so worried about emptying it out, i didn't sleep very well last night. I will let you know tomorrow how i get on . :thanks:

I have the 980 nas well - thought it had developwed a leak, so I emptied it with a garden hose (15M hose - syphon started easily with a bit of sucking).

It turned out to be condensation under the tank. Once I had emptied the tank, taken it outside, dried it with a towel, and refilled it tot ry and find the leak, there wasn't one.

I took it back inside and refilled it, and haven't had a problem since. (I did put a towel in between the rtanka nd the stand for a while to stop any furteh condensation dripping to the carpet, but have since moved house, and am now without the towel again with no issues whatsoever

Thanks moeldner,as it's still under guarantee the shop is changing it for me. I find it a bit deep to try and work in and also find the Light and Filter sections very heavy and awkward to move, as i am 64 Years young. The shop has agreed to change it for a Hagen 1200. I already have a 800 and have had no problems with it .

Well the tank is now empty i decided not to use the hose because i took some buckets of water out for the fish and plants, and it looked to be about 3 quarters full , so i thought it wouldn't be to hard emptying it that way.
The shop is delivering the new one tomorrow, so will be doing everything all over again but backwards this time  At least i can refill with the hose thank goodness.

Sounds like you are dealing with a really nice lfs. :good: There's only one by me that provides service like that, it's my favorite shop.
