I've been searching for info. on Emperor Tetras on t'internet and haven't managed to find much useful information about them. (The info. I've found isn't all the same.) I'd very much like to get these fish (to live in my 39 gal. community tank which I'm about to set up.) and was just wondering what your folks experiences of keeping them are? (Do they shoal? Do they make good community fish?)

Thank You!

They are great little fish and will do fine in a community tank.
What other fish are in your setup?

Thanks for the info.

I haven't set the tank up yet and am not sure on water conditions so will have to wait and see. I'd like to get a shoal of about
10-12 cardinal tetras (I think they'd go nicely with Emperorors with two shoals of tetras), some pearl gouramis, and some kuhli loaches and have got a few more ideas of other fish. (Perhaps a pair of dwarf cichlids.) Will have to see what I can have.

Thanks.

I really want a few of these guys. I cant find them anywhere though!

You seem to have a good stocking plan. I would not recommend Kuhli loaches mainly because most of the tim you wont see them. They are nocturnal and will hide anywhere (even inside your filter ). Why not have a group of a dozen corydoras and perhaps, if you must, some kuhli loaches. Remeber how ever you stock the tank, build it up gradually, only a few fish at a time, this will enable your filter to cycle properly. A pair of Apistos would do nicely.

thought you may wish to know how to sex them, to ensure you get a good mix

When the fish are young (ie most you see in a lfs)look at their eyes the males have a bright blue eyes and female are green.
as they mature the females tend to be a bit smaller than the males when fully grown also the males have long extensions to the middle rays of their caudal fins.

Thanks for the replies.

I'd buy the kuhli loaches expecting them to hide as I'd hope it would make the tank more exciting when I actually do see them! If I'm honest I'm not the biggest fan of cory's, there's something about them that I don't like. I'm sure a lot wouldn't agree!

Does anyone no what sex ratio I should look to get? Would this influence their behaviour?

Thanks again.

I'd try for a mix of 1 male to 2-3 females if the intension was to encourage spawning/breeding
otherwise 1-1 would be ok :good:

Sorry to bring up an old topic. (Dunno if it's forum illegal but nevermind I've done it now.)

Anyways I'm just about to go out and perhaps get my first fish for my tank and was wondering if emperor tetras were a hardy fish that could be introduced to the tank early/first thing?

Cheers.

personally I'd not risk any tetra in a newly cycled tank.
I do recomend harliquin rasboras or WCMMS.
depending on the tank size, leopard or zebra danios and gold barbs are also very hardy.
