Emergency

lol damn tanks why oh why do we get ourselves into this.

Smithrc... if you've just loged on read my reply above this. i dont want you to miss it. you may have saved me £180...

just read it - yep its normal... all 3 of ours do it :)

I hope that solves it :)

(mines a stella :D)

[edit] just re-read poured water in the two holes on the top (for the taps) to get rid of the air pocket and it just ran straight out the sides (by the handles)
I think we have a winner :)

I dont top them up too much anymore... I leave an airgap at the top so that the water dosnt sprt out of the holes when you put the lid on. Then reconnect - it'll bubble and fizz for about 30 mins but will sort itself out after a while :)

:band:

one keg or two old chap.... awesome so if i put it all together, ignore the leakage and plug the taps/pipes back i am not going to get 50 gallons on my feet right??

I had the same problem as you jim with the water running out of the sides of the unit, took me ages to figure it out but think i cracked it. Was well naffed off when happened as mine are only 2 months old. I took them apart & put them together again so many times and always had torrents of water running out!!. You give me the clue when you said 'i pushed down with all my weight'

When you go home turn them off as per usual & take apart just to make sure the seal is in place then lightly place top onto unit then slowly use the clamps action to lock them evenly into place instead of pushing on them, I tried this over & over and it works everytime. I believe it's either the water channel design or the seal levers up when you shove on it too hard.

Let me know how you get on.

tried that and whatever pressure i used it still ran down the sides. i think i'll put the thing in an empty bucket, clamp the top on. plug the pipes in and see what happens. at least the bucket will give me about 20 seconds to react if the tank starts emptying...

thanks for your help people. i really appreciate it.

i'll keep you posted

This problem is really easy to resolve..............BUY AN EHEIM..............and it wont happen again :D :p

yeah care to lend me £180 maytee i'd love one.....thanks apparently thats how much one costs for a 50G.

i have a spare fiver in my back pocket if you know of any on ebay... lol (i'm not joking either)
i'll see if i can get this thing going again if i do it'll go another 3 months before being switched off again. way too much hassle.

(new car drinks petrol like a jet fighter hence the skintness...)

My eheim 2215 only cost £61.00 and included everything, double tap connectors, spraybar, hoses etc, just set it up and go, it would do fine for a 180 liter tank, mine is on a 160 litre and it does a great job, water is sparkling clean, I just rinse the sponges every 2 months thats the only maintainence required, the filter is totally silent as well.

Eheim Classics

I'd just like to chip in and say thats an absolute bargain!!

Paul

yeah my lfs said that one is the minimum (cube is 50G/225 litres at a guess) but he said the right filter for the tank is the Eheim 405.

i'll see what i can do with this first. thanks mate

All the best James - hope it gets sorted. Sorry I can't offer help, but what I can say is that I'm with zig on this one - go Eheim !

My Eheim 2224 was £90 absolutely fully inclusive. But you can get a classic model for slightly less.

Not entirely sure where the £180 comes from unless you're talking over the top, top of the range

sorry for the slight threadjack jimbooo, but can somebody explain the difference between the different ranges of eheim filters.. e.g. ecco, classic, professional.. and so on... Apart from the rather obvious price differences.

Cheers

Sorry to but in, did you fix it? did the suggestions work?

I am looking to get a external filter and have been reading this and sort of panicking. do they leak alot?

and I also have a fish guy who thinks I have money to burn and don't want to get ripped off.

cheers

lol, still at work, not touched it yet.

in general they dont leak, no ned to panic this ones 2nd hand and about 6 yrs old

same as ours - all are 2nd hand... 2 are now 8 years old - and work fine :p

anyway... hopefully these will help...

the lever that holds the 'tap' in, clips into the lid.... the lid is hollow...

the water then leaks into the grove round the filter...

and out at the lowest point...

see, its a simple design fault :)
