How often should we carry out water changes of 50%? Every other day or weekly?

Every day until the nirites get to under 1.
Ive read back through and see your set up has been going for a year. Maybe your filters cant cope with the mess anymore. How regularly do you wash out the media from the filters and are you still doing it with tank water.
Get redings from the tap as well.
Certain meds as well can kill bacteria from the filter have you used anything recently?

FILTERS; The media is washed in the tank water on a weekly basis
MEDS; We have recently used Metho' Blue

The blue can kill the bacteria so thats why its cycling again.
Another reason for it to cycle is washing the media in tap water.Water that hasnt been dechlorinated kills the bacteria as well and also cold water will knock it back too. If you cant use used tank water to squeeze it all out in then use warm dechlorinated water.
