elephant nose fish

any1 know anythin bout elephant fishes.....any1 got 1?

would like to hear any stories or get any info on them

I've never heard of elephant fish, can you take a pix and post it for us? I'm curious what it looks like.

Gnathonemus petersii or elephant nose belongs to the family Mormyridae.

I don't know hat much about them. But Im sur Elephant Nose Fish are a relative of the EEL family, rather like ghost knife fish. They find there way about using small electric pulses, rather like the electric eel. Don't worry though they won't go electricuting your other fish.

They prefer a sand substrate as they have sensitive noses which can be easily damaged on gravel, oh and they require a varied diet like blood worm and flake food etc.

ive noticed a clicking noise in the tank since i got him.......is iy him doing it or am i just bein silly

they are lovely but he's still a bit shy

it would be a very faint click, but that's a yes. Their clicking can be (barely) audible. They make it when they're happy.

About the flakes... mine have never, ever taken flakes. They live only on the bottom, making surface feeding impossible.

EN's are best fed via putting a frozen chunk of food in their cave (must have lots of caves for them to chill in,) or thawing it in a little tank water and using a pipet.

when u say use a pipet.......what do u mean.......will it eat from the pipet???

I got one in my community tank - as already said, he spends most of his time on the bottom of the tank - I have a mixture of very fine gravel and pea sized gravel and he eats from where he can find any He doesn't like flakes and eats frozen foods only (same as a lot of my bottom feeders) I use a turkey baster to put the defrosted food straight onto the gravel and they all make a beeline for it - including the flake eaters. He gets on well with all the other tankmates and so far there's not been any problems with him at all.

here's some more information on the clicking.. Listening to Electric Fish

As far as pipet use.. I use it to inject the food close to the fish, so that it's easily accessable by them.

I feed bloodworms and brine, switch out every other day.

Your fish will develop "peanut head" if it's underfed. Basically that means that you can see where the skull is, and the skin is tight on the skull, and there's no fatty layer between.
