i've added a couple of extra tanks since my last electricity bill, and also got a tumble dryer; however just had a bill recently for the quarter thats gone up by about £100! I'm just wondering how much difference in their bills people have noticed since setting up tanks, just to try and get an idea of how much of this bill is fish tanks and how much is other appliances. for reference i have 5 tropical tanks all running at about 25 degrees c now, 55g, 30g, 25g, 20g and 15g, as opposed to 15g and 25g at the date of my last bill.

My bills havnt really been affected. Mind u i only have one 3fter. But its got heaters, pump, filtration.

The tumble dryer is the one thats killing u.

I had a 6 x 2 x 2 tank up and am on an electric key meter so have to top up electric everyweek with about £9 but I have since also got a 8 x 2 x 2 tank and noticed that every week we are having to put approx £16 in the electric so alot is the fish tanks i think you will find :(

Aquariums need remarkably little electricity to run. Your 3 additional ones probably account for about 20% of the cost increase. The rest is probably due to the dryer. Dryers are electricity hogs, almost as bad as air conditioners.

when we first set up my 60 gal, the electricity bill went up a nauseating amount. to cut back, me and my roomate have tried to make a concerted effort to not leave lights on unecessarily and to not have the central heating/cooling on all the time. so far the bill's gone down about 20 USD -- not too shabby.

yesterday i replaced all the light bulbs in my rooms with their equivalent flourescents. since a flourescent tube uses about a third as much power as an incandescent bulb, and i'm the primary culprit for leaving the lights on, i'm rather looking forward to next month's bill!

Looking back at electricity bills from a few years ago, it seems like 14 tanks with 360 gallons between them kicked up the bill around $50. Comes to around 14 cents per gallon. Heaters suck up the most juice. 13 of the tanks are in 1 room, with a heat vent cut into the main trunk of a forced air system. It's cheaper for me to run the tanks in the winter, I open the vent & close the door, the room gets up to 80F.

It will be the tumble dryer.

I have 28 tanks, 27 in a fish house with on other form of heating than the tanks themselves. The room is at a constent temp of 68 deg.
When i set up this my electricity bill went up by £60. I felt this was reasonable considering there is no other form of heat in my fish house.

So with yours going up so much i think you can safely say it will be the dryer.

cheers for your thoughts/input everyone, back to drying clothes on hangers throughout the flat i think!!

fishman_1, you are my hero....28 tanks. One of these days I hope to be there. I've just got to figure out which 2 rooms of my house I don't need anymore. I guess i could sleep on the couch and fill the bed room up with tanks...

I just don't watch my television or listen to my radio anymore. Instead, I watch my fishtank. So I guess in a a way that makes up for the electricity used. :p

our bill went up by about £40 per quarter with my tanks

I pay this towards the bill so my parents don't have any reasons against them.

That's cool The-Wolf but I dont think i will bother working mine out exactly cus if the missus gets wind she may want to put the plug!

Only kidding. :D

My fish house is in my garage. I split my double garage down the middle and have one half for the fish and the other supposidly for the car but......
it is currently full of empty fish tanks ready for when i get the time to move around the tanks inside my f/house to get more tanks in!

With the rubbish on the TV lately i prefer to look in my main tank at my fish.

My 70 gallon tank will have an average power consumption of roughly 180W, 24/7. That seems like a lot of power, but because my house is electrically heated, the energy consumed by the tank will just represent electricity not consumed by the heating system for 6 months of the year. In the summer the heater is next to non-functional so the power consumption drops further.
