Electricity Bill

it'll be approx 100USG, so going by the 5W per gallon theory it's a little over but about right.

600W of heating for ONE tank? Is this tank outside in the garden or will it be a geysir tank? :S
That's funny. I can just imagine the fish trying to stay out of the water coz it's too hot.

I had a chat to my LFS today and mentioned this thread. He laughed at the $30 month increase in power bill. Apparently the shop power bill went up $40 a day at the start of summer.

My concern is if it goes during the night or if I'm away for a day etc.

Besides, using two won't actually use up any more power than using one, they'll just have to work less ;)

the main reason you have a couple of heaters in a big tank is so the water is more likely to be a standard temperature. Good water movement will help with this. The other reason is for back up purposes. If one fails the other one should be able to keep the fish alive. And as mentioned above, it will take less time for a couple of heaters to warm the water which means they will be on for less time. You stilll use the same power.

With all that lighting you probably won't need the heaters. Even if the heaters aren't needed, they still tend to fire up every so often. using power and adding unwanted heat. I pulled the plug on both my heaters in November once I realised I get all the heat I need from the lighting. The tank peaks at 29 at the end of the halide cycle.

our marine tank costs us a fortune, mostly due to the lighting. 250watt metal halide, 2 x twin pc t5's, 2 x t8 actinics. reckon it add's £40 a month or so to our bills (not based on science, just knowledge of how much money leaves my account)

you people need to look at using skylights for your marine tanks. A friend of mine had some fitted above his marine tank and now he only uses the halides for a couple of hours a night in winter. The rest of the time he gets free lighting and the skylights don't warm the water.

Skylights as in making holes in the ceiling of your domicile?

Hahaaa

Now theres an enthusiast for you.

Heh.

I'm a massive proponent of double heaters. Safety and redundancy.
