you caught me off guard for a sec, if your referring to TPN as in Tropica Plant Nutrition then yes you'll need more that's only a trace element.

Your also going to need Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) , depending on your current water situation aswell.

I highly suggest you read the estimated index this has all been covered in the thread at the top of this category. and we will be here for any additional quesitons you may have.

Thanks mate. I have read the pinned thread, just wondered if it is possible with just TPN (Tropica Plant Nutrition).

If i use TPN+, that has (N) and (P) so would i need (K) also?

What i do is buy dry ferts... and mix them myself.. it's cheapest method.. and fun!!!

Potassium Nitrate KN03
Monopotassium Phosphate KH2PO4
Potassium Sulphate K2S04

and then i buy just the Trace elements.. (liquid dosing bottle from LFS)

And your good for a long time.

Google rex grigg.. he sells the dry ferts.

TPN and TPN+ both have K already.

The only difference between the 2 is that TPN doesn't have N & P.

If using just TPN+ as a fert then you don't really need to use EI but it wouldn't work so well under high light.

The idea of TPN is that it is for use with high fish loads therefore they supply the N & P (Not an exact science of course but basically what it means)

The TPN+ is for high plant loads with not so many fish so the N & P has to be added.

A lot of people (including myself) use TPN as a trace as we have higher light (*don't go by the WPG) and therefore the N&P supplied by fish and the TPN + is not high enough for our plant loads.

*The reason I say don't go by the WPG rule is that my HOT5s come in at 1.8WPG which would be low to medium light but the WPG rule was based on T12 lights therefore I would bet my 1.8WPG is equal to nearly double that on the T12!!!

Take a look at this tank of George Farmers that uses just TPN+ (remember that he is using only 1WPG of T8 in this tank)

This shows that under low light TPN+ does work on its own.

Thanks Andy.

I've been trying to work out whats the best method for me for ages now. I've had lots of good advice from here, but i cant seem to put it all together and make it work.

At the moment, i have a 260 litre tank with about 75% - 80% coverage of plants. I'm running the Carbo-Plus CO2 system on the same timer as my lights which are 108w of T5 plant pro tubes. (i have another 108w available but am scared to use it because of algae problems.

I have been dosing 25ml of TPN every week (not TPN+ because i am quite well stocked with fish too) but have recently changed this to 7ml per day and 2 x 50% water changes per week.

My plants are growing but i have an ongoing issue with black hair algae (i think its staghorn).

Any help at all appreciated.
