So i bought an ehiem classic 2215 for my new tank(when i get it). I bought the filter media yesterday and started setting up. This is my first external and was not too sure on how to go about it.

i am running the new filter in my current 90ltr setup to build up bacteria. When i opened up the box i was hoping for instructions, Which were not there. Anyway took me about 30 mins to get the whole thing ready to turn on. Now i was told before that they are notorius for being hard to start, so i didnt know what to expect.

When i turned the filter on it seemed to not work so i left it on for 5 min to see if it would go on its own. That didnt happen so i just took the taps off and sicked like i was started to syphon. The water is really not nice at all lol. As soon as i got water in my mouth away it went working fine, just gave it a shake to ge the excess air out of it.

So all in all they are not that hard to get going if a complete novice can do it with no manual and no experience in 40 min

I don't know why people have trouble starting them. As you say, once the thing is full of water, turn it on, couple of shakes to get any extra air out and away it goes. I have almost exclusively Classics. The ones with fancy handles or button to prime them just seems one more thing to break.

LOL
Ah yes! Eheim Classics are the old water in the mouth filter. I wouldn't have it any other way
Used these for eons. Great workhorses.
Trick is to turn off the tap before it reaches your mouth (practice makes perfect) LOL
