Hi

I currently have my tank running on an eheim ecco 2232. It has been running a couple of months so am starting to consider certain filter media renewl. I have, as reccomended in the instructions, the course filter pad at the bottom then the substrat pro and then the fine at the fine pad at the top.

I know most of the biological filteration is taking place on the balls but I am not really sure when it is best to start changing them - I was them out ever-so-often when i am cleaning the tank and they appear as new. If anyone esle uses these I would be interested in how often they change thiers?

THanks
Steve

General concensus is that there really is no need to replace any of this unless it's starting to disintegrate.

Just rinse thoroughly under siphoned-off tank water.

The only thing I replace every few months, is the white filter floss.

i don't understand why all the filter manufacturers recommend you replace the filter media like sponges, bio balls etc etc after so many months. (actually i do know, they want your cash :D ) If you give them a good rinse in tank water they are find and last indefintely. Like Bloo the only thing i replace is the mechanical media that i can't wash out like the filter floss. Everything else just gets a clean. I've got sponges over 4 years old in my filter still and they are fine.

I'm in agreement with Bloo and ahkiu, filter media doesnt need replacing until it is either disintegrating or is so clogged that even washing out in tankwater doesnt get it cleaned. I have Eheim substrat pro in my filters that has been in there 4 or 5 years and only gets a clean every 3 to 4 months.
