Eheim Pump Help

I just bought a eheim universal pump 1260, it arrived today...i am planning to use it as an submersible for water changes.

When i placed it into the water...it started pumping water for about 5 seconds...then it continuously stops and starts. Just wondering if anyone would know what was wrong?..it is brand new

What way have you set it up, give a discription of pipework etc. Where is it positioned etc

Its just at the bottom of my 230L bucket filled with water, so i can pump water back into my tank. One thing to note was the impeller was spinning then it stops and starts again. I have changed the size of the outlets, tried holding it to the ground, keep it on for an extended period of time, sometimes when you give it a rest it will last for 30 seconds and go back to stopping and starting, tried changing the adapter that i use to connect it.

Plumbing uhhh...

this is what it has in the book...cap, threaded adaptor (intake side, intake grill, coarse filter,retaining ring, pump cover with o ring, impeller assembly...etc
