I'm thinking of replacing my broken Fluval external filter with an Eheim 2026 (Professional 2) as I hope to move up to a larger tank in the future.

Why is the filter media so expensive? I'm looking at £110 for the filter and in excess of £30 for the media!

How long can I reasonably expect the media to last?

you don't have to use Eheim media in the filter, you can use whatever you like! Filter media will last quite a long time. Don't listen to the instructions that tell you to replace it every 3 months, they're just trying to get more money off you. The only media I replace with any regularity is floss as this gets clogged and becomes ineffective, but it is so cheap I don't mind. You also have to replace carbon as it stops working after a couple of weeks, but sponges and bio media etc will last for ages as long as you rinse them in tank water every now and then!!!

I guess I'll wait until the filter arrives (I'll order over the net without buying media) and then I can see how much I'll need.

£30+ seems extortionate!

it is expensive, but much better than the standard sponge media

it can be re-used pretty much forever with the occasional rinse (obviously not including any carbon), and won't begin to fall apart after a few times.

I have the same filter and wouldn't change it.

fully agree with rvm you should only need to replace the top filter floss -

I use only Eheim media however, it is expensive and i am sure there are alternatives but hay you are buying the best filter so buy the best filter material!

I have my filter for over 12 months and have never changed the mech material (bottom layer) or the mid layer - I do however replace the top floss layer every 4 - 8 weeks they cost me £6.00 for a box of three.
