Eheim Or Fluval

ahhh nothing quite puts the cat amongst the pigeons like the great filter debate

Didn't selectively read the specifications there are multiple models of the pro 3. The 2080 being the largest. I was using the specs from the 2075 or 600 for wrong or right. The 2080 seems to run about £320 in the uk with media so no i wouldn't say it was comparable 2217+ which runs about £95. I think it was you that selectively read my post. I wasn't running an indepth analysis of eheim filters just giving the op a very basic comparison of a few eheim filters.

But if needs must

Eheim Classics

2217+
•Pump output 1000l/h

£95 with sponge media

Eheim Pro 3

2071/250

•Pump Output: 950 ltr
£118

2073/350

•Pump Output: 1050 ltr
£142

2075/600

•Pump Output: 1250 ltr
£173

2080

Pump Output: 1700 ltr
£255

Pro 3 prices are without media. Found the pump flow on the 600 listed as 1250 and 1350 but used 1250 here as these all came off same site.

all those are pump power, not flow rate. even with Eheim, flow is 30% (minimum) less than PUMP rate. you can take, at least, 50% of all others except Aqua one. (even that is a rule of thumb) at the moment, i find, its harder to find the "new" 3 series, without media, prices are the same though. though, perhaps, we look in different places!
even so, i wouldn't consider a "new" pro3. pro and pro2 are very competitive, on price, and of proven reliability. that's both hew and second hand. i still remember the problems when the Pro3 2080, first came out.

I'd suggest a 2226, comes around the same price as the 2217. err, give or take.

thanks for the information, but i have the email from Eheim, listing flow and pump power claims. lol, those i don't know from memory. :hey:

I only want to have 1 filter. Our power bill is already through the roof, so 1 big filter would be preferable to 2 smaller ones.

Another little thing to think about is 2x Eheim 2217 run at 40W whereas 1x Fluval FX5 runs at 60W, (well in the UK anyway) meaning running two maybe the cheaper option in the long run,

From your select four the only one IMO that would be suitable is the FX5,

Other options I'd be looking at are either an Eheim Professional 3 2080 or as said above two Eheim Classic 2217s

My mate introduced a huge aquarium (it was 7 or 9 ft can't remember) and installed 2x FX5 beasts. He's an Eheim fan.

Things to consider:

- Media included. I've never been a fan of sponges, that's what tends to be included in cheaper filters. My JBL has sponges, my Eheim has ceramic balls and plastic rings for better surface area.
- Power consumption. Cause everyone likes watching those pennies.
- Locally available spares.
- Reliability. Not much beats peace of mind.
- Twin filters versus one. Redundancy, extra water circulation.
- Ability to detach water-filled hoses to clean out the filter. Eheim has JBL by the balls on that one.
- Noise levels.
- Accessories supplied. JBL has Eheim by the balls on that one.

I don't think there's a "wrong choice" once you've considered the options. Just don't buy something unsuitable (you've asked the question - so that's not going to happen).

Hi

Thanks to everyone for all their help. I have made the executive decision and gone with the Eheim pro 3 2075, with the thought that I will be able to add one of the "classic" range if this is not coping. But I am pretty sure that the new one will be way more efficient than the current one. I did consider the 2080 but its cost - $ 685 + $50 approx freight together with it being too big to fit in the cupboard under my tank made it not an option. The cost of the 2075 was $419.42 (on sale) plus only $30 freight. I also thought about the lack of filter trays in the classic and thought that the trays would allow for more water flow around the filter media and make it easier to clean and re set up.

I phoned the company and found out that the filter media and hoses etc are all included as well.

Thanks again for all your input, it was really helpful.

just to clear up my comments on filter power, from eheim. you can see how much adding media and piping affects flow.
