Eheim, Fluval Or Tetratec External Filter

Both are good filters, to prime a filter place the inlet pipe into the tank and then suck on the outlet pipe to begin a syphon, aim the outlet hose into a bucket, once water begins to come out of the outlet pipe put it into the tank and switch on.

I've used Tetratec and Eheim filters, I can't fault either, but the problem with the TT's has been rectified, personally I prefer the Eheim because of its durability, true flow rate and German engineering, but I like the TT because the media capacity is huge and to be honest they maintain their flow rate well.

so with the eheim i would have to take the oulet out of the tank and suck to start a siphon everytime i open the filter to clean it? sorry for all the questions, you know what its like when your torn between 2 things

Yes, you only need to clean it every 3-6 months, or when the flow rate considerably drops, that is unless it has a priming function, which I'm not sure if it does or not.

ok thanks. think im leaning towards the ex1200, i have heard alot of people say you cant have enough media and it seems it holds alot more than the eheim, plus the priming function is handy. people go on about the quality of the eheim, is the ex1200 good quality, are both your ex1200's still nice and quiet after months/years of use

Yep, quiet as a mouse mate. The priming function is excellent as is the quality. The customer services is excellent too. Very helpful indeed.

Where is it going to be kept? Make sure it fits through any cupboard doors as it is massive in real life!

it will be kept in a rather big cupboard behind the tank (tank is built into the wall). it will be kept in there along with all the other cleaning and feeding equipment

or go for the aps range more or less the same as the tetratec but around half the price depending on the model

APS flow rate is appaling and nothing like what is stated. Caz tested the 2000 and got a result of 900lph iirc. Their pipework is also very cheap and nasty from reading reviews.
