I have decided to go for an Eheim external filter for my new 300L tank.

As the tank is visible from both sides, I think it would be a good idea to buy a filter and heater combined? Does anyone have any views on this ?

Also

Are the wet / dry eheim filters better? Are they noisier? more difficult to maintain? worth the money?

Any advice would be appreicated befoie I spend large amounts of money.

just get the biggest capacity filter your wallet will run too. for myself i would avoid the filter heater combination, as problems with the filter or heater will result in the loss of both!!!! to get the heater out the tank look at the Hydor external heater, it goes inline with the external filter pipes.

wet and dry are right up there in the wanted section, but they are not good if you want to plant your tank.

I do want to have live plants so that sounds like wet and dry are right out. Good the list is getting shorter.

I have been doing some reading and it looks like the Eheim heated filters have an external thermostat that fits into the tank. Depending on the size of this I guess I may as well have a convetional heater/thermostat and try and hide it. Does anyone know how big/small this sensor is and I guess it could go near the top of the tank?

The inline heater idea sounds good, but its another connection in the pipe work and the last thing I want is a leak :)

I have an Eheim Classic external cannister (model #2217) with an inline Hydor external heater. They Hydor works great! Everything hidden underneath in the stand. Just one less device hanging in the tank, leaves you with a nice clean look and one less obstruction to contend with whilst cleaning the glass.

My setup is all new, but so far no leaks and I've been milling around inside the cabinet a bunch of times already. The connectors on the Hydor heater are for all intents or purposes identical to that on the Eheim. Both units were easy to install and the pump is *very* quiet too.

ya my eheim classic is gd , very quiet ,and, surprisingly, a pretty strong flow..in the box it says it was rated at 116 gph...but it looks like 170 to me!

Mine also came with 2 shutoff valves for the outlet and inlet hoses...its nice very easy to disconnect the hoses and take ur canister to a sink for cleaning! luv this feature

I use an Eheim Pro II 2128, which has a built in heater. There is a probe that you place into the tank. The probe isn't that big. The Eheim Pro II 2126 also has a probe, but is designed for a smaller tank, compared to the 2128. I also use Eheim Ecco's with inline heaters (Hydor ETH201 200 watt) that you connect inline to the output of the filter. The Hydor inline heaters do not have probes, but just check the temp of the water coming into the filter.

Either filter/heater combinations keep my tank temps even.

Eheim 2128 all ordered.

Thanks for everyones help.

I didn't know about the EHeim in-line heaters. But I will stick with the heater in the filter for now and see how I go. If I've made a wrong choice, watch this forum for me selling a second hand one going cheap ! :)

You and me in the same boat - just ordered my 2128 for my soon to be clean looking Trigon. Hope you didn't get yours cheaper than mine!

Your knackered if you use any external heater that uses the filter to pass water through it, if the filter packs up the water wont pass through the heater. :/

Very true, so I just buy a spare unit ;)
Seriously, a quick pop up to the local pet shop and I can get a temp heater or filter. I can live with that, lets hope the fish can :)

I like the idea of keeping the tank free of equipement. Now have all the equipement just waiting for the tank to arrive, and starting to get impatient :)
