I used to empty the filter completely. Then have the intake hose in the tank and suck on the end of the return hose. As soon as water started draining into the filter I would put the return hose into a bucket next to the filter. I would leave it like that until water flowed into the bucket. Then I would put the return hose back in the tank and turn the pump on.
