Got my eye on a Rio 300 litre tank without the normal Juwel Internal. To house Cichlids.

Is it me or can you get a brand new eheim off the internet for not much more than 2nd hand ones seems to attract on e-bay?

Which filter would you recommend for cichlids in a 300 litre tank

Eheim 2215, which i can get for £54.99 brand new and free postage, only foam media though, 600 l/h (holds 4 litres volume) and states for tanks up to 350 litres

Eheim 2217, can get for £69.99 brand new and free postage, only foam media
1000 l/h (holds 6 litres volume) and states for tanks up to 600 litres

Eheim Pro 2- 2026, can get for £89.99 brand new, free postage with ehfimech and substrat media, 950 l/h (holds 4.9 litres volume) and states for tanks up to 350 litres

Whats the real difference between a 2217 and a 2026 pro 2? The 2026 has lower "stats" in terms of filter "volume" which i believe is the amunt of media it holds, but is it a more technology sound filter than the 2217?

Never owned an external before, which one for 300 litre, thats pretty much "idiot proof"

My vote goes for the Pro range. Nothing wrong with the classic range at all (the are fabulous filters too), but the the pro range is just that little easier to use - for me anyway.
The auto prime function and the snap disconnect etc. However if these are the only ones you are considering, my vote goes for the 2217 (But I'd use some Efimech & Substratpro in there too) - because it's rated for a higher volume.

I find that Eheim can be slightly generous in terms of what a filter is said to be suitable for. So would now always go for a filter rated for a larger tank. As opposed to "just" on the upper limit of what the manufacturer says it is suitable for. So if a filter is rated for a 20-40 Gallon tank and my tank is 30 Gallons, it will be fine. But wouldn't get the filter if my tank was 40 Gallons. I'd go for the next size filter up.
If I had free choice (and money) I'd go for the Eheim 2028.

Second hand Eheim canisters do command a high price, they run forever & hold their value. The line you use depends on how much fiddling you want to do during maintenance.

I'm running a 2026 on a 65 gallon show tank in my living room. I don't want to be messing with dumping media into containers with white carpeting around. In this case I'll spend a few more dollars for convenience. The rest of my tanks are downstairs, spilling water & such isn't a problem on concrete, and the utility sink is right there. I can spill & spray water to my heart's content without getting in trouble with the wife.

The 2026 is a great filter, and it comes with the media. Eheim media isn't cheap, and it's another thing that lasts seemingly forever. Once you add media to the 2217 you will be in the 2026 price range.

If you want idiot proof with messy cichlids go with the 2028. Put a light under the cabinet as well, it makes maintenance easier, and you can show off the filter to your friends.

I have a eheim 2217 with the a course & a fine sponge, ehfimech & substrat pro and it's spot on for my 350Litre, well recommended

I paid £23 on ebay for it without the filter media and then found out that the media pack cost £38, so not the cheapest way to go but me & me fishes are happy

I agree with Tolak. I missed this part. So definitely the 2028

Hi, I run an EHEIM PRO II 2028 on my 120 gallon now. I love it so much that I bought another one for my new 110 gal !! I'm not sure which ones have the baskets inside to hold the media. But they were quite a bit cheaper and the opinions I got was that they filtered just as well but were so much more work and messy to change. I love the convenience of just lifting each basket out seperatly as necessary. So I fell it's definatly woth the extra $$ just for the convenience.

yep, i run a eheim pro 11 2028 as well.cant recommend it enough.

If your thinking about removing the internal filter go for the 2128 thermo.

Im running a 2028 and a 2128 thermo model and cant recommend them enough.

both are very quiet and keep my 90 Gallon Crystal clear.

Im running the 2026 on a 55 gal community tank. Cant fault it!
