I use a Eheim 2215 and pretty much any media you can fit works well. Mine goes from top to bottom:

Sponge Filters (3-4 layers)
Bio Balls
Sponges
Bio Chem Stars
Sponges
2 packs of Eheim Substance Pro
more sponges
Fluval Bio max

pretty much any media that fits will do. I heard people fill them up with kitchen scrub pads (non chemical ones of course) and say they work wonders and are cheap. I also bought a huge thing of filter floss for under 5 bucks and cut it up into layers. Just make sure its full of media.

I have some Eheim course pads, some kitching scrubber sponges and soem filter wool, do i need any more? like bio balls?

When i swap over should i just transfer the media from my internal over? or run both along side each other for a while? or squeeze some filter juice from my current media into the new stuff and then run along side to mature?

Sam.

I personally just stuffed all my media from my external into the canister and let it run. As long as it has all your original media you should be fine. Just make sure its compleatly full of media before putting into use. If its full then your good to go. Also good luck priming it, its a huuuuge pain.

put intake inside tank and suck, once the siphone effect takes place the water will start to flow without needing to suck anymore and you will have a flow going, after that plug in and go. Mine makes alot of noise but I kinda just tune it out since I havent been able to fix that yet.
