hi just bought a juwel rio 240 and it came with a eheim 2213 filter, all second hand so no instructions with it, i understand that the filter makes a noise just after being primed while the air escapes the canister, but ive been reading how the filter is pretty much silent when in operation, mine isnt however it sounds like an air pump, quite annoying. ive tried all i can think of to get any air left in it out but still it hums away quite loudly.
any suggestions or is that just how it is?

You can get the manual online from Eheim's website as a PDF. The filter should be silent, so it is either broke, full of air or not set up correctly.

i downloaded it, not a fat lot of use really. it seems to be working really well as there is a good amount of water pumping through it, just a bit noisey

Is there any air coming out of the filter outlet ? If there is then it's possible that the filter seals are leaking and letting air in. If there isn't touch your hand against the side of the filter and see if you can pick up any vibration. If you can it's probably an issue with the impeller. Either something is blocking the rotation of the impeller (Most eheims you can remove it to clean it and the area.). When you remove the impeller check it over for any broken bits. Sometimes little pieces of the impeller perish and then snap which also causes vibrations in which case you need to order a replacement impeller(can get em on ebay). Careful when removing the impeller as they are magnets and can be cracked if your not careful. I don't own this specific model of eheim but have 4 of the eheim pro 2's.

Could have some air stuck in there, a common problem. Rock it back & forth while running a few times, see if there are any bubbles coming out, or change in the sound. If not this, as mentioned either the impeller or shaft, most likely the shaft.

cheers guys, i tried the rocking it back and forth and yea now n then a load of air did come out but then it stopped. i can feel some vibration when holding the canister.
ill take it apart n see if the impeller is broken at all, ill prob replace the seal ring and the impeller as i was told the unit is a year old but ya never know.

Only a year old? Shouldn't be having problems! To check if it is the seal, you can smear Vaseline around it and see if that helps: if it does, then the seal does need replacing.

Another thing, is the filter touching the sides of the cabinet? That could also be causing it (although unlikely).

I always "oil" my eheim seals with vaseline. makes them last longer without perishing. Pretty sure this is what eheim recommend anyhow.

I didn't get that far in the manual, but all my Eheims came with a pouch of Vasiline-like grease.

Also check to make sure you have the small black bushings on both ends of the shaft. Without these it will run, but with a lot of play, causing the impeller to rattle around. The silicone grease Eheim supplies is a glorified sort of Vaseline, I've been using Vaseline on Eheim seals for years with no problems.

also make sure you have the inlet/outlet pipe work straight and as up and down with pipes as short as possible.
