I just got the Eheim 2073 and finally set it up (the instructions are appalling). And the green tubes that come with it seem to me to be a royal pain.

I have the spray bar slightly above the water line. It states in the manual that this is how it should be placed, so it makes a lot of noise on full power and disturbs the water surface a lot.

What if you don't want to disturb the surface so much (say to avoid CO2 loss). Is it possible to put the spray bay under the surface or get a different part that doesn't cause as many ripples? Or even just remove it completely?

Cheers.

It is not only possible to run a spray bar below the surface, it is how all of my spray bars are positioned. The depth of my spray bar varies from about an inch to 3 inches depending on which tank you are looking at. If I could not submerge the spray bar, I would not have one.

Thanks OM. This is my first cannister filter so I just wanted to make sure. I thought most people put the spraybar underwater.

The instructions state: 'Assure the the [sic] nozzlepipe (25) [spray bar] is suspended above the water surface'.

There seems to be no mechanical or physical reason why it could not be submerged and the instructions are rather sparse and unclear.

There is also a diagram which (it's very small) shows the bar 10cm above the waterline.

It just needs to be above the water when first setting up or when the water level has dropped below the spraybar and the filter has been turned off.

It prevents an air bubble getting trapped in the end of the spraybar.

Just set up above the water line and when the tank is filled and the filter is running, push the spraybar down to the level you want.
