Hi, recently acquired this two inch Blue Jack Dempsey. Just noticed something wrong with one of its eyes. It seems to look like the iris/pupil are much smaller, and the rest of the eye seems quite battered almost as though its been punctured. Any ideas on whats wrong? and whether its permanent? Sorry for quality of photos, best i can do right now..Thanks

Hi
what are the water stats in the tank?
tank size and tankmates?

It looks a bit tatty tbh, is there anything in the tank that might be bullying it at all?

The second pic suggests it could be the start of Pop-eye or a bacterial infection

Hi Davo

Stats are Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate registering minimal
The EBJD Is about 2 inches long, just got him last night, so I think it came in this state.

The tank is only a 3foot tank by 12" width 24" high. I am ordering a 6foot tank from ND, and have another 4foot tank which I would like to move the EBJD in to, but there is currently a convict in there, which has to go, before the ebjd can go in, hopefuly I can do this on the weekend. Currently the EBJD is in with a few 1 inch sevs, a few cory, platys, rasbora's.

When the pic was taken the EBJD had only been in the tank for a couple of hours, I wanted it to acclimatise then as soon as i switched the lights on, noticed the eye and the tattiness..will the tattiness improve? It seems that one of the back fins on the same side as the eye is also torn. Will this heal?

How would I treat pop-eye or bacterial infection? Is pop-eye when the eye gets larger - 'pops'? Here it seems as though the eye is deflated...

If the eye is torn then it may just be an injury, this along with the tatty fins should heal quickly provided the eye hasn't already been infected after the cut,
Its hard to see from the pic if it is just bruising or something more, Personally I would just keep the water as perfect as possible and add a dose of melafix to see if this helps to heal the tears.

It also may be worth either posting in the emergency section or PM'ing wilder to ask if she would have a look at the pics, She will probably know if there is anything better you can treat the eye with.

Thanks a million Davo, will do a small water change tonight and keep an eye on things...will also PM Wilder, cheers

Hi, I haven't treated the EBJD as i'm sure its an injury the fish came with, I should have been more vigilant when purchasing the fish. I have added more pics below, if anyone has any opinions, please advise, thanks...

Hi, I actually purchased two EBJD from a 'breeder'. He never showed me the tank they came from, and had the two EBJds in a bucket when i got there. I know that he had on sale, 7-9 EBJD's and reckon he gave me his worst and smallest as the other is barely over an inch, but perfectly healthy. I'm guessing this EBJD prob coped a beating from the other EBJDs in the tank, I saw his normal breeding JD tank and was way cramped up, so i reckon the tank he never showed me was of a similar condition...i'll post in emergency section also

Id be very tempted to take the fish back and demand a refund.

I know its a sad affair, and you want to get the fish back into good health, but chances are that if the fish is this damaged externally - its gonna have internal or agression problems too.

Is there a society simila to the RSPCA that you could "dob" the breeder in to?

I have a fish that is blind on one side, and it will never feel happy in my tank. It swims and eats, but is always edgy and seemingly concerned that its gonna get eaten - even whe it stays in its shoal.

I wonder, do re-conditioned fish do well in peoples experience?

thanks for your reply Saz

I wish I could, I asked the seller about this, as soon as i got home, left the fish to acclimatise with lights off for 2 hours, when turning on immediately noticed the eye, phoned seller left voicemail hoping to exchange the bad ebjd. he texted me back the following morning, saying basically, 'bring me both fish back and i'll give you a full refund'. This is fair enough, but I only paid £20 for both fish, and petrol would come upto £10-£15 also, so basically resulting in no fish and approx £25 out of pocket ..I told him that it wouldnt be worth my time for a refund, but an exchange would be ideal, that i would pay more if the fish were healthy...anyway cut a long story short, he said he had no more ebjd, but a day later the whole group were back on sale...i'm absolutely positive he gave me his worst ebjd and the smallest and the 2 he gave to me...i shouldv been more vigilant, lesson for the future, i guess

I think the EBJD can see out of the bad eye, but not very well...I understand what ur saying, it might be more aggressive as it is more 'paranoid' and may develop problems for me. I'm not sure what to do...

I wish there was somewhere I can report him, maybe I can post on the site he advertised on to warn other ppl, but ppl rarely post on the forum over there..

Take it back. I, personally would pay extra for the piece of mind that my fish are in good condition.

Pop eye is a *****, and kinda hard to get rid of IMO.

If the eye was damaged... it might fall out, or it might permenently clouded over. I think the eye healing is the rarer of the possiblities. Use some mild antbacterial if your going to keep it. I recommend tea tree extract.

it might not be from aggresion(sp?) but from bad genes. ebjd's are notoriously sensitive due to them being the weaker gene and imbred/linebred. once they get to 4-5 inches long they usually do ok but you need to keep pristine water and really be on the lookout for signs of illness until then. honestly getting a UV sterilizer might be a good idea as an extra precaution.
