Ebay External Filter Came Today!

I was looking at this external (if it's the one I think it is) - would it be sufficient for a 240L tank? Bearing in mind ideally it would be the only one on there? Just considering my options - been wanting an external for a while, but cant decide between brand new or second hand...

That pic was taken before if was going full before i pushed the button again and some of the water is escaping on the other side as its the tube with the holes in it (forgotten the name) How can you tell lph by a pic to lol

coldcrazzie - If you flick through their listings they have recommended tank size on them.

i've checked all the connections and eveythings fine and the pipes are full. i think it was just me expecting to much with it being my first external. i thought i would halve the spray bar lengh to just one section, so i pulled it off whilst the filter was still running and without the spray bar it blew a crater in my gravel down to glass and that was from 15" high  so i think its fine :good: i also did'nt think it neccasary to have the 3 layers of filter floss on each tray so i only left one in, plus removed the carbon as well.

well, i suppose you could call it experience! and, possibly, because i have measured the flow of internal and external filters. that flow is considerably less than the claim. but, if you wish, its simple to measure. just measure the amount of water that, catch it in a container, flows for a given time (say 1 minute) then you weigh the result. multiply it up, and you get lph.
and, remember. you get a very nice copy of an Iphone, from china. outwardly it looks and works the same. but after a few weeks they break or die. even if they last, some time. they dont do anything, the Iphone does, except phone and play MP3's. but the box looks good. being as its only sold on Ebay, new. don't you think a quality filter would find sellers, else where? a review, of this filter, will only be relevant, after a period of time. it will be how effective, long term, the filter is, that will give info.

@coldcazzie, no, not remotely. 100l maybe. even if the flow claim was true. a 1000lph, with no media, results in a, rough, flow of 400-500lph, with media and pipes. 2x flow, is not really enough, with this type of filter.

So without knowing things like the height its being pumped at, the width of the tube, that water is being leaked at the back you can say so surely? Im not disagreeing with you on the ipod touch though.

brixhampaul - It did the same to my sand bed, gave me a a mess to clean up lol

Right thanks! The way you have explained it makes sense - I shall look at more like 2000-3000.

did you buy this off allpondsolutions? was looking on getting one maybe 2 myself

I've been looking at these, fancy the 2000lph one to go with the fx5 i ahve on my tank to give it a boost, they do seem a little cheap to be true but will wait and see how many others find them ok:)

rather spooky i saw this months ago and im now waiting to see how much santa sends me for xmas - its either one of these or a little more for an eheim 2224 is santa gives me the money (found the 2224 for £80 including spraybar & full media.) but anyway, randomly decide tonight if anyone on here has bought one of these cheapo's and lo behold its the very first topic....

I'd like to say that the design is very much the same as a tetratec(marineland) and that parts look like they would work going from 'pictures.' Like I said earlier, the filter has been running just as good now as it was the day I got it a year ago. That doesn't mean its as superb as a name brad filter, but for the price, It's a good short term buy, I guess.

I'm not go around, telling all my friends to buy one, saying they're better than Rena, Fluval, eheim or anything else. It's suited me for my 55g so far and I do check it about once every couple of weeks to make sure that there aren't any leaks coming from the main seal or anywhere else. Everything has been running fine so far(touch wood).

There's gotta be other people on here or elsewhere, that have tried the dreaded jebao canister filters and had some success. I post links to stateside reviews on those but don't wanna link to other forums. Also Cascade still sells there awful high water bypass filters to this day. Granted they are EVERYwhere as far as buying them, ebay included, they are still terrible. Actually, worse than the sunsun canisters IMO.

I guess, after all this nonsensical typing, my point is that the filter isn't the next fluval or eheim or Rena. But as a secondary filter, or a backup in case of a failure, it works. If quality over cost was the only reason for buying equipment, why are there so many brands that offer basically similiar features?

I think no matter what material object a person buys in their lifetime, the longer it lasts, the cheaper it costs. If you do the math.

I'm anxious to hear the people that bought the other models of this thing. I'm skeptical to see the big differences in flowrates amongst the models.

I think I found a knockoff of a knockoff

you dont need to see the height, nor know what fittings are used. the volume of water, coming out the pipe. is enough to gauge the flow, roughly.

we spend a fortune on fish and tanks. what's the point of being stingy with the filter. if people cant afford the filter for their chosen tank, GET A SMALLER TANK. Ask any keeper with a mature tank, if they would replace the filter they use, with this one. what do you think the answer would be?

as i say, i will be interested in the posts as the OP's filter is used. if they post for any length of time.

there is no need to spend a fortune on fish gear. but please. the filter is one of the most important parts. why but "cheap" copies of filters that are, already, not the best?

to just add to this conversation, i don't think you can judge a product on retail price alone, i mean look at toyota hilux cheap as cheap but they won't let you down, same applies in this situation i will be curious to see how this goes. do they come with any sort of warranty?

Oh of course Im not saying go out and buy this over a name brand if you are planning to, im just saying, for what it is, it works well.

I guess one of the aspects of this hobby that interests me, besides the obvious, is trying out & experimenting with all the gear. Now I don't have a pile of money to blow on this stuff so I 'experiment' within in my means. Sorry, I should've said that instead of going on a pointless rant in my last couple of posts.

Whether it be a used name brand filter, or some weird filter I've never heard of, filters from back 20 years ago, or a knockoff, the idea of trying them all out to get a better grasp of how they work internally from one to the other, knowing what features are worth buying for, understanding the history or evolution of them through the years is all very intriguing (sp?) to me.

So,after stumbling on this white & blue gem from the orient, & needing a replacement for the internal I absoluely despised, I opted for it. For the same reasons I just mentioned above. Call it dumb or a waste of money, but to me, so what? You gotta start somewhere I guess.

I'd rather explore whats available to me & buy it myself instead of having some LFS talk me up with the best gear.

Actually, the first canister I bought was brand new Rena XP1 off ebay, for $40!!! Here I thought I was getting a crap filter without knowing any better. Find one for that price now.

Anyways, I agree with boboboy 1000% on not skimming out on the filter, for the record. I just wish that companies could make them more affordable. I know thats contradicting after what I just wrote, but the lower the price, the less likely I would've been to buy the sunsun to begin with.

Thanks for reading

i just thought i would say that i did as boboboy suggested and tested the flow and mine came out at 600lph, thats with more media than it came with minus the carbon.
