Hi,

I have posted before because my fish have been mysteriously dying.

Here are my tank water readings:-

pH 8.5-9
Nitrate 12.5 mg/l
Nitrite 0.0 mg/l
Ammonia 0.0-0.1 mg/l

I introduced 3 new neons that all died, could they have brought a disease with them? I didn't notice anything?

I moved them from a soft water area to a hard water area, could they be sensitive to that?

Is the pH too high? All the rest of the levels are okay according to my 'Interpet' test kit.

The tank is not new, I have 2 mature filters in there and the fish were mature adults so I don't understand why they have died?

If anyone can shed any light on this situation I would be very grateful.

Thanks
G

Hi Gloria,
Your PH is VERY high for neons, if they came from a shop with a PH of 7 or below then they would have needed a long time to acclimatise to your PH. You say you moved them from a soft water location, I will be really naughty and assume the water was also acidic which is not always the case, but this is a big change for our little neon freinds. What other fish do you have? How big is the tank and how long has it been running?
I would recommend getting african cichlids such as the tanganyikans or malawis who will love your water as it is!

Hi,

I have 1 guppy and 1 black phantom left. The tank is 20 gallons and it's been running for approximately 5 years in another location (soft water) with a friend and 1 month with me at the hard water location.

I would like to slowly populate the tank again, but I would rather get fish that match the water conditions. Do you know which other types of fish besides the African cichlids which would be best for these water conditions? And which are also compatible?

Is there anything else which might be suddenly killing my fish?? I just can't understand what else it could be?

Thanks for your help!
