Hello,

Please help me , I am new to the tropical fish world and I have dying fish already, I was told this would happen but I think the tank is too hot. Can anyone tell me what temperature it should be please? :(

I say around 72-82. Look at the fish index, and it tells u the temp it should be under the fish u want. Most are in that range though.

take a look at the other thread...

The tank should not have lots of fish in yet as its just 2 days old...

approximately 73-79F
thank you :)

hi

these were given to us as the man who owned them prior was going to kill them off, so I have no idea how old they are or much at all about them really. would the heat kill them or is it something else. I have turned off the heater for now for a little while, but I cant let it drop too much as I know they dont like that either. I have also turned down the heater so that when it goes back on it should not be as hot. Is this the right thing to do?

The temperature probably isn't the problem. I have posted a reply in the thread you did in the Newbie section. As far as the temperature goes, for goldfish and other coldwater fish, it should be around room temp, about 72. For tropicals, you should try to keep it around 77 to 79.

What did u have your temp at before?
well it says now 34.4 i think it was about 36 earlier but it is still way too high . what can I do?

34.4 is definitely too high. That's almost 94 degrees. It should be around 25 or 26. The problem most likely isn't the temperature itself as tropical fish experience those type temps in the Amazon and other regions they are native to. It is more likely that the high temperature is driving the oxygen out of the water and they are dying from no oxygen. Are they around the surface gasping for air?

For now, unplug the heater so the water temp will drop slowly. Then turn it down to about 25 or 26. Once the water temp drops to around that number, then plug it back in. Also, add an airstone or lower the water level slightly to get more surface disturbance form the filter output. Both of those will put more oxygen in the water and help the fish.

If you just got the tank, then it isn't cycled. What size tank is it and what/how many fish do you have in it? What type filter do you have? Have you tested the water? What are your readings for ammonia and nitrite? Sorry for all the questions but the answers to those will help us help you with your problem.

Is the tank Cycled? Maybe the fish are stressed. Are there any noticeable signs of disesase such as white spots or cloudy patchs?

May be you can tell us what type of fish you have in there, and how big it is? Definitely turn down the heat. Every heater has an adjustable thermostat.
