dyed/injected

dyed fish are not something interesting and cool, i'll tell you that. there are two methods of dying a fish.

in the first method, the fish is dipped in a chemical that removes his protective slime coat (the thing that protects them from diseases) and then dipped into a colored dye which leeches into the skin. finally he is redipped in a poor copy of a slime coat, and the result is a fish that is 'colored'.

second method is probably more painful. the fish is literally injected with the dye. a needle is forced into the spine, and the colored dye is injected. the only produces a fish with the top half or a crescent shape on the back that is colored.

dyes leech out and get eaten away after a while, making the whole unbearable process worthless as the colored fish soon becomes a regular albino or glass fish.

BettaBoyz is right. Dying fish is a disgusting practice that should be boycotted.

I also believe the dye runs the fish's risk of cancer up.

I agree. NO dyed fish should be bought. It's a horrible practice and causes serious stress to the fish, if they live that is.

i agree with everyone else - please dont buy dyed/ injected fish is a horrible cruel parctice & buying these poor things just encourages the sickos who think up these ideas  ive recently seen blue tiger barbs(looked like weird little ghosts that had been dipped in ink) & albino corys with cerise(yes cerise) pink tails both dyed/injected both horrible. not the fishies fault it was tempting to 'rescue' them to give them a home (all 50 of them) but then i thought it would just encourage the shop owner to order more which is what we dont want.

here's a little link about dyed fish and some of the fish this is commonly practiced on:

please don't buy any. its a cruel process and totally unneccessary. the dye fades after a period of time returning the fish to normal, putting them through a pointless and painful process. :(

i saw purple tiger barbs the other day   (obviously dyed - they were a bright purpley/bluey colour). they didnt look as happy as most tiger barbs :( NO fish should EVER be dyed

I agree with everyone else, i think that people should leave the fish alone. They are all beautiful the way that they are. The people who are injecting them are just there for the money. If people would stop buying them, then maybe they would stop injecting them. Sad stuff. Makes me want to inject them with new colors. LOL Sorry just a thought.

When i bought a glass fish, the day i decided to start becoming obsessed with fish keeping, i had NO IDEA that this was un natural colouring b/c i had a beautiful betta for a year who was naturally brightly coloured. I decided to look up about my glass fish and was MORTIFIED to find this out about the dying, needless to say i'm never going to buy another one. I love Cruelty (short form for her full name which is Cruelty to Animals), but she has had nothing but problems, she's really mean to other fish and has had the ick since a few days after i got her and i cannot get rid of it on her. also the dye is sorta crunchy looking now, and i hope that she can expell it all eventually. so plz dont buy these fish, they are so beautiful without dye, i really dont understand who would do this to them.

poindexter, i agree. glass fish are so neat au natural. they look almost freakish with the dye to me. the whole point is that theyre this neat almost transparent fish. i'm sorry yours is doing so poorly, but at least you now know about this practice. i hope she pulls through.

:D what are dyed or injected fish?ive never heard of that before! -_- :fun:  :hyper: :kana: :*
Hi NEWBUTNOTDUMB69 :)

I saw an albino oscar that was dyed purple and sold as a "BooBerry Oscar" at Halloween. The lfs (a chain store) also had dyed corys and other fish. How horrid!! :hyper:

Here is a link that shows a picture of one of the dyed corys:

Whenever you see painted fish, please express your views to the store management. :-( Perhaps, in the long run, it might help. Better still, find a good independant lfs and patronize them instead of the chains. They are more apt to respond to your opinions and not stock these poor fish. (They probably don't anyway.) You will be glad you did.
