Hi All,

Just had a trip to a LFS and for the first time ever I have seen dyed fish. The fish in question were danios that were dyed bright Pink. The poor things looked awful, really small and not very happy at all. I was quite surprised to see them in this place. I was debating whether or not to say anything to the staff, but then I also was not sure of what to say, if this make any sense. Anyway just thought I would pass this on as it got to me a bit.

i still find it really upsetting when i see them :-(

worst I saw was a beautiful pair of kissing gourami's, about 6-7" each and dyed with this awful baby blue and pink flower pattern all over them. Really upset me, they were tucked away in a corner of the store, not for sale with a notice saying the store hadn't ordered them and they'd been sent as a substitution for something else and they couldn't send them back. I guess they thought the best thing they could do was not sell them and look after them, personally I don't think they should have been on show, sure there's a tank out back somewhere they could go in or something like that.

although most fish keepers wont buy died fish on principle there are those that will and as long as there are there will always be suppliers that provide them.

you may be aware alot of fish stores are now signing a petition saying they will not sell dyed fish any longer,
maybe you could speak to them with this approach ask them if they would be prepaired to sign it? it so then they would have to get rid of their dyed fish and hopefully not get any more

it cant hurt to speak to them about it, after all they will want to keep your custom (1 would hope) :good:

I'd say something to the store owner. I saw a few fish in a LFS that were tattooed with different patterns and were selling for $44!!! I told them I thought it wasn't cool they sold those kind of fish. I don't know if they thought much of it, but tell them you'll take your business somewhere because of it. Get some of your friends to say that as well. If they hear it from many people, they will probably stop selling it. They probably won't remember what you look like so don't be afraid to go back to buy other fish. Just threaten them with that, and get some friends who don't buy fish to say they're never coming again. It should work !

Are you sure they weren't genetically engineered Glofish?

One may not agree with the creation of these fish either, but for very different reasons than dying them.

Glofish are not allowed in the UK.
There have been quite a few dyed fish appearing around. Please check if the store is on the Practical Fishkeeping list of stores that have pledged not to sell dyed fish. If they are let PFK know.

But the thing with glofish is they were engineered like that to sense water quality changes. That was their initial purpose and, in my opinion, it was a good one but someone got the idea that aquariasts may like them and started to market them. Personally I don't have an issue with the whole genetic engineering thing when it is done for a good cause (yes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions) but I think the normal zebra danio is so much better looking.

I dunno today i saw some danios they had a pinkish color , it looked kinda fake

I'd say something to the store owner.

Or, you could wait outside after the shop closes, tackle the owner, and while a friend holds 'em down, give 'em a really terrible tattoo (nice and permanent), preferably with an ink unsuitable for tattooing...

grr.
