Hiya my dwarf neon female rainbow has been acting odd for the last 3 days she has been at the top of tank jus sucking air from the surface of the water and she is also not eating any food now. the tank is well oxegenated and water stats are-
Ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10
ph 7.4

jus had another good look at her and her fins look a bit rough round the edges on her tail and underside also they look to be clouded not clear any help would be great

Hi,

I have also had this problem a few times, it seems to be females that are effected more than males.

I had perfect water stats with no sign of bullying. Thats assuming yours are also ok.

I simply put it down to particularly stressed fish, with even the best care in transporting these fish are much less hardy than other species. The males can be quite dominant in the tank, so god knows how aggressive they get when confined.

Please try a treatment if someone else suggests it, but don't expose it to your other fish or you may stress the shoal.

I wish her the best of luck, but it doesn't sound good :-( .

What test kit are you using.

Issolate her and try a bacterial med.
It's sounds like bacterial finrot if the fins are cloudy looking and raggy.

We use the API Freshwater Master Kit.
We have a tank which we can get up and running asap to put her in, what med would you recommend?

Need location for a med.

United States Maracyn.
United Kingdom. Myxazin by waterlife.

If in the uk just add the myxazin to main tank.
Maracyn can knock water stats slightly, so I would issolate just to treat one fish.

Let me know how she gets on if you don't mind.
Increase aeration also. As med reduce 02 in the water.
Don't forget to remove black carbon from filter if you use it.
Good Luck.

sadly she didnt make it thru the night but my male has also started doing the same sucking air from the surface andhe seems weak as he keeps getting moved round by the current will still get meds to treat him before we lose him

How long have you had the rainbows? I ask, because, praecox (dwarf) rainbows, seem not to be particularly hardy fish, even with pristine water conditions, correct food, no disease etc, I find that around the 6 month mark < I start to lose them in the same way you are losing yours, the stay at the surface, dont eat, lethargic and then after 2-3 days die off, over a period of a few weeks I lose them all, whilst every other Rainbow species I keep no problems occur.
