I am setting up a new tank for dwarf puffers. I just got a 24x18x12 (22.5g) tank (high kind).

I was told this would be good for about 8 dwarf puffers (seems to work on the 2-3g per fish rule). I was also going to odd a few dwarf ottos for cleaning up, maybe a small plec too - would that be ok??

Sand substrate, pebbles and rocks to make some caves etc. Java moss and fern for sure, but not sure what other plants, is there any preference? How heavily planted is good for DPs (I have read very heavily - but I do want to be able to see em! lol).

Going to use an internal filter that is just seeding now in 1 of my other tanks, then undecided yet whether I will fishless cycle it the rest of the way or just add the ottos and plec to get it going adn then the puffers. Suggestions?

Do they like wood in the tank??

Anything else I am missing or should know? :look:

cheers

Dwarf puffers are freshwater. When I was thinking of puffers I thought gobies, but both the types I decided on are FW :)

Thanks anyways

You can try adding a plec, one that stays relatively small as they are pretty armored but do have another tank ready to move it to if the puffers get agressive.

Java Fern and moss are both very good plants for these puffs as java moss is in they natural environment and they provide good cover/ sleeping areas.

I wouldnt worry about not being able to see them puffers tend to beg at teh glass when you are in view so if you come close enough they will come out of hiding and greet you, or atleast mine do, they're right beside my computer and as i write this they keep eyeing me and hunting but if i even so much as look at them they come flying to the glass. Very personable critters.

You want to break up lines of sight to cut down on agression so the more plants the better and the abundance of plants allows them to pick territories that wont conflict too much.

Dwaves are indeed 105% freshwater so if you can find some fW bumble bee gobies those will serve ok ( or they do in most tanks, remember puffers are indeed puffers and can be super agressive).

Wood wouldnt make much difference to them other than perhaps effecting pH. So depending on your water conditions but it hsouldnt do too much. watch for tanins leeching out which would give your water a tea like look that most hobbiests try to avoid.

I hope everything goes well and for good practice i would read the pinned article at the top and go through this board as there are some good questions and answers concerning DP's. there are also some very nice info sites that have been sadly banned from this board that could be cross referrenced with your already done research.

thanks for reply.

yeah the plec is a maybe. I have 3 other tanks so he can be rescued if need be. I reckon the finnage might just be too tempting for them lol. we'll see.

I haev since found a few sites with lots of info, maybe they are the ones you mean ;) And yeah heavily planted is the deal eh, so I might go the whole hog and do a proper dutch takashi amano style thing. I always wanted to have a go at that anyways.

Over here, they dont really distinguish. BBGs are just BBGs - and they sell them as FW - who knows if they really are. I've had one in my community tank for 6 mths tho and he gets on great, but then brackish ones supposedly canm live in FW fine too..... oh well.

cheers gain for replies
