I have a spare 10 gallon tank LXWXH - 16x13x13"

I was wondering if its big enough for dwarf puffers?

If so how many?

Also if this option is not viable, would it be able to house a baby musk turtle, again if so, How long for?

Thank you

No to the musk IMO

Why is that?
I think the 10 gallon per inch of turtle rule is crazy, I dont see the need to have a 5 inch musk turtle in a 50 gallon

I don't know squat about turtles, but think a 20 gallon long (30 inch by 12 inch footprint) would be the smallest tank I'd keep a 5 inch turtle in.

following my lack of knowledge of turtles and a bit of common sense, most of them are only semi aquatic, if aquatic at all, so for one, so that means they don't have the thing fish have where they can utilize the length, width, and full height of the tank.

For two, they're a tad bulky, length, width, and height wise, so of course they should have length and width at least to help them move around if they so please. Most fish only have length and height, and their width is less of a concern.

For 3, I wouldn't even keep a 5 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank anyway, so why would you keep a 5 inch turtle in one?

Unless told otherwise by a turtle expert, I think the 10 gallons per turtle rule is bull, like the 1 gallon per inch of fish rule. But that still doesn't mean you should keep one in a 10 gallon tank.

I have a friend who keeps turtles, and my understanding is that musk turtles and stinkpots can be very active. They need enough room to swim and do laps. They also need a varied habitat with open spaces and places to hide, plus a basking platform (this type of turtle is primary aquatic, but does bask.) You might be able to keep an adult musk turtle in a 10 gallon and keep it alive for awhile, but it wouldn't be a happy, healthy turtle.

Having dealt with Musk Turtles quite a bit in the past, I agree with onidrase that a 20 long would be the bare minimum. Going to take a lot of maintenance to keep it clean. If it was me, I would put your female Betta in the ten gallon, your Flame Dwarf in the other 20 gal with your Neons and Cories, and there it is, open 20 gal tank.

Just because you CAN keep something is a smaller aquarium, does that mean you SHOULD ? Its the same as keeping Polar Bears in a zoo. It can be done but SHOULD it ? When they roam hundreds of miles in their natural habitat. IMO its all about wanting to give something the best possible environment. It depends on the shape of the tank too. If that 50 gallon tank was very tall instead of the traditional "long" shape, then 50g would still be insufficient as the volume would be meaningless. Hope thats food for thought anyway and that your eventual set up looks great and you enjoy it :)

2 Dwarf Puffers in a decently planted setup would be the best option imo. You would need good filtration though. :good:

IME with turtles and tortoises, they are reeeaaallly dirty creatures, beautiful but dirty. So they really need a reasonable amount of water.

As for the fish, sounds ok for a couple of dwarf puffers to me, might be a tad dull though, like two small peas floating around  Thats all down to taste though.

Hmm thanks guys, the tank cracked anyway, luckily there was no water in it, I came downstairs and saw a big crack right around the whole thing :S .
Going to buy a 50 Gallon for christmas for 2 musks and Transfer my gourami to my other 20g and make that into a dwarf puffer species tank, 4 Puffers perhaps?
