Is it possible to keep one (or two) dwarf puffers in a 27 gallon tank with a few shrimps and some cardinal tetras? My tank has some plants as well as driftwood and and smth like a flowerpot. The shrimps (1 jap marsh shrimp and 1 or 2 indigo shrimps) are usually well hidden. I know puffers eat shrimps but mine are at least 1.5cm long (that is the shrimps) and there are tons of snails to keep the puffers happy....
so can such a union be possible?

The thread currently right under yours is called "Bought some Ghost Shrimp for my DP's"... I have a feeling it answers your shrimp questions. :)

I wouldnt go for it. I read your post in the "I'm New" section, and I really would say no ... the puffers will definatly eat the shrimps as well, and I'm not a 100% sure your cardinals will be ok either  ... Puffers will not be the option for you they really should be kept in a species only tank.

To get the snails out though, you can try floating some lettuce or maybe cucumber in the tank overnight, in the morning you should have quite a lot of snails eating on that and you can just get rid of the lettuce with the snails at the same time. I believe there are also some small loaches that eat snails that you might be able to add to the tank, but I'm not a 100% sure about this coz of the shrimp ... look into that I'd say though

Yes the puffers will love the shimps.. starting with their eyes then the soft underbelly.

Nearly all puffers' primary food in the wild is crustacians & other invertbrates. You cannot keep any shrimp/prawn/yabby/crab/lobster/crawdad/crayfish/crawfish of any species with any species of puffer.

Mine leave my shrimp alone. :look:
There's always one exception to the rule... :D

Generally speaking though, it's unwise to put inverts in with puffers as they are their natural food.

I dont think Elmy will need to use that method of snail removal because the DP's will take care of them and quite happly i might add! :D

Yeah, I know ... but seeing as she wanted to keep her puffers in a community tank, I'm thinking she might be better off NOT using puffers but trying that trick ... keeping puffers in a community tank is a big no no if you ask me
