Dwarf Puffer Advice

Well...one thing I do want to ask are dwarf puffers one of the species that can change their sex?! His line has completely disappeared and the wrinkles are barely noticeable! Has someone replaced my puff! LOL

Am going to isolate him as even though he has some colour back, he still won't eat. Not sure if a puff would go off blood worm but at least isolated I can get food to him easier without the others squabbling and pushing him out the way.

No puffers don't change sex

His dark belly stripe will probably have gone because he's not the dominant fish now :D

LOL thank goodness!!! He still my main man ;)

Tank is set up with sand (needing to settle overnight) and have the thermometer running to ensure good stability of heat and will introduce tomorrow. :)

I hope you have a mature filter in there with possibly mature substrate too? If he hasn't got a fully cycled tank to go into he'll have problems!

he should be okay =] and like Jennybugs said make sure the tank is matured as puffs need good water quality :)

hes probs just a tad stressed out so just leave him explore :)

Hello Guys
Set the tank up yesterday and transferred over tank water from the main tank along with plastic plants that have been in the main tank and the filter which I have had running in the tank for just over a week. Introduced him just now making sure the temps and params the same, he has hidden which is understandable. Have left him well alone and will attempt to feed tomorrow. He still hadnt eaten yesteray or today which is the reason why moved him. Do hope that I have done the right thing with all fingers crossed, will be keeping a close eye on the params and hope can get some live bloodworm for him as cant go to the usual place and the other may not have it.

Really hope I have done the right thing, reassure me! (Added as much of the main tank as possible in most aspects).

Morning update, he is pale but at least swimming a little around the tank, had filter on full power but it seemed a little strong for him so have it on the lower of the two settings (its an Elite Mini Filter) and see if the filtration is ok on this setting. Will watch abit more and then see if he will have bloodworm (though still may be a little shocked).

I personally would have left him in the original tank with the divider. But now he's in his own little tank with peace and quiet, hopefully he will recover soon. Good luck :)

Try to tempt him with some live brine shrimps if you can get hold of some. All my DPs go nuts for them. They definitely prefer live food a lot more. Be patient and don't give up :good:

(Did you have mature filter media in the mini filter? The filter is quite small so make sure to check the water parameters regularly to make sure the filter is doing it's job)

He has eaten 2 and half of bloodworm! Extremely happy :). He has been exploring his surroundings with interest (not hiding in a hole in his fav plant) little shy but hoping these are all good signs. Will be keeping a careful eye on the water params and will do what is necessary to keep his tank right for him.

The tank divider would have actually cost more to buy separate than set this up (as had all the bits and pieces anyways), plus would feel better he had his own space and didnt harp on the others.

I am hoping to get a lift at some point today to the store that does live food, otherwise it may have to wait (locals only tend to do frozen). He generally does seem ok :)

Thanks for all the help and support on here, you guys have really helped. Have a piccy of new setting, give me 2 mos.

congrats on him eating again, i love the way they eat bloodworms

hope everything goes well! and i didnt minnd helping you out, and im sure everyone else didn't mind either! great job x]

Thanks ever so much! He seems to really like his new home! There has been a small spike in nitrites but going to be keeping up on water changes over the next couple of weeks. I have put the filter strength to its high flow, it quite a strong flow and hope does not upset him too much. Sorry guys I am such a skitzy mum :)

The tank will go through a mini cycle! A week of running the filter in another tank isn't long enough hun. If I were you I'd go and get some Tetra SafeStart to add t the tank to boos tthe filter. It's good stuff and will be the best for your guy in the long run. DPs can't manage well if there's ammonia and nitrite in the water.

I actually have some left over from the other tank and will add that for good measure (it has been in our fridge so all good).

Didnt think of that though will give daily water changes till over (managed it on the large tank as the original cycling in that tank went wrong but they are now fully cycled and have been for 3 weeks!)

Thanks and will let you know how get on and hopefully not too hopeless

Just an update he seems to be doing fine, keeping an extremely close eye on the water parameters, he has eaten again today and put a snail in for him (hope he notices it!). So all good so far :)

sounds good then :)

hehe watching them eat snails is hilarious

glad he has eaten for you! best of luck :good:
