Hello, We have just got 2 Dwarf Gourami today one male and one female, they both seem very healty but since putting them in they have stayed near the bottom of the tank and hidden in the plants :/
Is this due to the fact they are still trying to get used to theire new surroundings?

Any advice would be great.

Cheers Simon

I too got a pair of dwarf gouramis today, 1 male, 1 female. Sure, they seem timid to me but thats just with thier new surroundings. I found leaving the lights off for a while perked them up, along with a light feed later on.

Hi, they are very shy fish and need plenty of hiding places and plants. Also the tank really needs to be 'matured' and not just cycled. Keep the water perfect as they are very prone to bacterial infections.

Last bit of advice to both of you and that is to get another female. Once over the shock of his new suroundings he will start pestering the female. This he will do relentlesly and if she decides not to accept his favours he will continue and the stress my eventually kill her  By having more than one female this will divide his attention :good:

After loosing 2 lots to infections I no longer try to keep them but good luck to you

Seconded on the cover thing, after a few hours, predictebly, the male started chasing the female. I quickly added a small plant pot and added more plants to provide her with cover. Worked a treat.

The male, however, has already done a bit of pruning of his own. He breaks off leaves and roots, then brings them to the surface. It's fascinating to watch. He likes his home tidy.

She still has'nt moved 6 hours in, still hiding in a plant, he has'nt really bothered her and at least he is now investigating the rear of the tank. Our tank is well planted with rocks, wood, plants and a plant pot for hiding, hopefully in the morning she will of moved if not will get another female tomorrow and see how it goes.

Love it when people take notice! :good:

They are both now no longer shy and enjoying the tank, thanks for the advice.
