I've recently started a 35g community tank. At the moment all it has is 4 Cherry Barbs (planning to add 2 more once I'm certain it's done cycling). I'm thinking of adding some Blue Rams, which from what I can gather are also known as Dwarf Butterfly Cichlids?

Given that they can be aggressive when there's more than one male in the tank I'm thinking I'll stock a pair. Are there any special considerations I need to keep in mind? In particular I'm wondering how they rank as far as fish for new owners go.

Blue Rams can be quite sensitive as new fish go. They're an artificially bred line from the original and that can create fussy fish.

If you're into the Ram's then it may well be worth taking a look at the bolivian ram. Much less fussy, and still a beautiful fish.

Oh an interesting option thanks :) Some quick research online suggests that they might get aggressive if they start to breed. Right now the only fish I have in the tank are cherry barbs. I plan to add a bristlenose pleco, and some other schooling fish (likely tetras and guppies).

the only fish I have seen called a butterfly cichlid is the Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus)

....never heard a blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) called a dwarf butterfly before.

Yeah I found a lot of conflicting information about the naming of them. Although the dwarf butterfly did seem to be the name given to m.ramirezi. Which leads me to another question, is there a particular website(s) that y'all would suggest for research that are better than others? Information online seems to be so varied and I'm not sure which sources to trust.

That's the problem with most common names, here in the states a butterfly dwarf is the dwarf jewel cichlid of west Africa.
